Hello World! Welcome Friends! If there’s one thing a global pandemic can do, it can foster a sense of self sufficiency. Through a year of isolation, fear, panic, and loss, more people have started to gravitate toward aspects of their lives that they can control.
Gardening is turning into more than just a hobby for many people; it is providing much of their sustenance, as well as the opportunity to develop a greater and more significant appreciation for the environment. For decades, the trend has been toward store-bought, processed foods. Finally it appears that 2021, has turned that mindset around. “Know more, and grow more,” is the attitude that gardening enthusiasts are taking, and spreading, to help keep the food chain strong, and Mother Earth less polluted.
Creating an Outdoor Space that Co-exists with Nature
In the past, the objectives for homeowners had largely been the maintenance of lush green lawns, with copious mounds of mulch, surrounding sparsely planted trees. This has long been the general concept of the picture-perfect suburban landscape. However, due to this 2021, mindset shift toward an eco-friendlier model, people are leaning in the direction of maintaining a more natural habitat. They are desirous of creating and maintaining landscaping around a pond that is free of pesticides, and toxins, and one which introduces a presentation of more vibrant plant life.
Continuing in this regard, and knowing that wildlife will always be drawn to, and part of, any gardening experience; creating natural perimeters to keep your plants safe, and also, deer and other wildlife safe, is both wise and necessary.
Erecting deer fencing is a natural and ideal way to create an effective, attractive barrier between wildlife and your plantings. There is no use of chemicals or toxins, and the fencing eliminates confusion for deer, and other animals, as to where they should and shouldn’t graze. Once animals encounter a deer fence, they are encouraged to find open fields and meadows in which to graze and feed.
Eating Healthier, Home-Grown Food
The pandemic has led to people spending more time at home. Shortages of meat, paper goods, and other relatively easy items to find, pre-pandemic, has led to a growing need for, and sense of, individual autonomy over the essential products utilized on a day-to-day basis. There is a heavier reliance on fruits, vegetables, and herbs, grown in today’s gardens, to contribute to the healthy meals which are now prepared at home, for sit-down-at-the-table family dining.
In many instances , children have, for months, been home schooled from their own living, or bedroom, via zoom. This has led to a need for parents to be increasingly creative in ways to occupy their down-time. Gardening is a hobby that different generations can enjoy together, and it has grown into a significant educational opportunity. Kids can grow their own carrots for lunch time snacking, and learn about herbs and spices, and how to incorporate them into delicious treats and meals.
Improving Quality of Life
While people may have been reluctant, at first, to give up fast foods, and super-sized restaurant meals, it is becoming evident that getting back to nature, even if it is done in your own back yard, is improving the quality of many lives. Gardening allows for the reduction of stress, due to its connection with natural elements like greenery, sunshine, fresh air, and soil. It is also a wonderful creative outlet: planning for the layout of the garden, deciding what plants and flowers should be placed together, etc. Some neighborhoods offer a communal garden where gardeners can socialize, and help one another with their plantings. All of these facets offer an improvement in the quality of life, over a previously isolated, processed food obsessed, society.
Garden Shopping Has Never Been Easier
Planting your own garden is a great start, but you still have to purchase seeds and soil from somewhere. Due to the changes that happened in 2020, garden centers have adjusted quite readily, with various convenience options. Home delivery, curb side pickup, an increased number of pre-made gardens, and fast mobile, in-store checkout, allow the home gardener to spend less time in the store, and more time getting their hands dirty in the garden.
All in all, 2021, is seeing a positive trend. For many, gardening is shifting from a mere hobby, to a respected modern lifestyle. The pandemic has reminded everyone, that Mother Earth is fragile, as is the normalcy of daily life. What savvy gardeners have known for years, the rest of us are now learning. As technology races forward, it has become more apparent that every person must find a healthy balance between external dependence, and learning what can be accomplished and provided by individual and family efforts.
