Hello World! Welcome Friends! So you’re a DIY prodigy, and nothing makes you happier than wandering around the house looking for new issues to fix, new home improvements to make, and new redesign and decoration elements to explore. Not only do you save money by dealing with the various issues in your home personally, but you also get to benefit from the satisfaction of knowing that you’re self-reliant enough to take your own destiny into your hands in this fundamental way, and sort things out directly.
Excellent… but have you considered that you might be better off actually just letting the professionals sort out your home for you?
This post is really playing Devil’s Advocate. All the points mentioned above about the benefits of DIY do stand. DIY is a great way of exercising self-reliance, being the lord of your own castle, and saving money at the same time. But it’s also true that DIY isn’t always the right answer to every issue you might encounter in the home, particularly considering the fact that your DIY skillset is unlikely to encompass every area of home design.
So, just as food for thought, here are some reasons why it might be a good idea to let the professionals sort out your home for you.
Because your time is precious
The first point about DIY that likely everyone can agree on, is that DIY is simply a time-consuming process — at least if the work to be done is any more complicated than tightening a few loose screws here and there.
It could be that, after identifying an issue, or coming up with the idea for a potential home-improvement project, you have to spend hours or days planning out the details, and then weeks or months putting your plan into effect. In some cases, it’s not unheard of for DIY enthusiasts to drag out ambitious home-improvement projects for years, only to eventually abandon them in frustration.
Of course, your time is a precious commodity, and isn’t the kind of thing that you should be too keen to haphazardly throw around.
Any time you invest in your DIY project is potentially time that could have been spent with your family, or put into another hobby of yours — writing, reading, knitting — or even dedicated to your health and fitness pursuits.
It may be that this investment of time is worth it on your behalf, and that you’re able to satisfactorily balance the other elements of your life while pursuing your great home improvement project, but it may also be the case that — if you’re like most people — you haven’t really budgeted your time as efficiently as you should have, and you could benefit from letting someone else handle the project on your behalf, while you spend your time on other things.
Because certain forms of home improvement are inherently dangerous for the inexperienced
In theory, just about everything involved in DIY — and for that matter, just about everything involved in life — could be dangerous to one degree or another. You could accidentally hammer your thumb while trying to get a nail, or you could cut yourself on a sharp piece of metal or a shard of glass, or get splinters, or get light burns due to handling corrosive substances.
Some home repair and home improvement jobs are, however, inherently dangerous on a level which far surpasses all of that more ordinary and mundane stuff.
Working with electricity, for example, can easily result in your death if you aren’t properly mindful and respectful of what you’re doing, and if you don’t have the required skillset and professional equipment.
Try to objectively analyze the potential dangers of any DIY job in advance and don’t be afraid to call up a professional if there’s a good likelihood of you accidentally killing yourself.
Because making a mistake with some home improvement jobs can cause long-term annoyances
If you’re building a new bookcase for your home study, and you happen to get some of the calculations a bit wrong so that the shelves are somewhat lopsided, that’s a bit of a pain, but it’s not the kind of thing which has to be a major, long-term annoyance, and it likely won’t be a very expensive issue to remedy, either.
If, on the other hand, you fit a widow incorrectly instead of getting some professional home window installers in to do the job on your behalf, then you are likely going to have to deal with a substantially more serious level of discomfort and annoyance, not to mention a substantial cost in order to address the issue.
If you made some mistake which involved your plumbing or your home’s electrical system, you would be even more likely to find yourself regretting your decisions and scrambling to correct the, with kitchen routinely flooding, or with no electricity in the home at all.
Because you don’t have the right equipment available to do the job
It might be that you’re really adept at all types of DIY and you might even have a professional background in certain roles such as having once been a plumber or an electrician. In these cases, you might know what to do when something goes wrong in your home, but it’s still unlikely that you’re going to have all of the same specialist tools at your disposal that a current professional in the field will have. Frisco Plumber is one such place that can help with your plumbing needs.
