Hello World! Welcome Friends! Termites live in colonies and tend to avoid interacting with humans as much as possible. Unfortunately, this means that a colony, or even several colonies, can be living under your home without you noticing them.
As a single termite colony can chew through six inches of 2×4 in just five months, you can easily see how termites cost the building industry over $4 billion per year. It also illustrates how much damage can be caused by termites in your home and why you could end up with structural issues.
In other words, you should be contacting the professionals in termite control to help you prevent the termites from attacking your home in the first place. If you think you have an issue then the professionals can take care of it quickly and efficiently for you.
Ventilation
Termites love moisture. In fact, they need to stay moist to survive. This is why they tend to create mud tunnels from under your home to the surface outside your home. These mud tunnels are visible and a sure sign that you have a termite problem.
The space under your home is dark, moist, and warm enough to keep termites happy. But, you can change this by ensuring there is adequate ventilation. That means air is flowing through the space. As cool air comes in it will lower the humidity rate and make the space less appealing to termites.
You can rely on a cross-breeze or you can use a fan to pull air in or push it out.
Seal It Up
Alongside ventilating your space you need to seal up any gaps that termites can get through. This means walking the perimeter of your home and looking for any crack or gap, no matter how small. Seal them and the termites, as well as other pests, will find it difficult to get in.
You should also put concrete around the edge of your home, covering the area from your home to at least six inches out. This makes it impossible for the termites to make their mud tunnels.
Inspect the Crawl Space
As termites generally head to the darkness of the crawl space this is where you’ll find the first signs of their presence. You’ll need to invest in a head torch as this keeps your hands free. However, it is a good idea to, take a secondary flashlight as well.
Crawl through the space looking at the wood. You may see the termites or you’ll see the evidence that they are there, such as tiny holes in the wood, softwood, and even blistering or bubbling.
You can then take the appropriate steps to eliminate them.
Tidy Your Yard
Termites are attracted to rotten and decaying wood. If you have any woodpiles in the garden get rid of them or put them as far away from the house as possible. If you tidy the yard the termites will have fewer places to hide. This makes any trip to the house dangerous and unnecessary, they will go elsewhere.
