Hello World! Welcome Friends! It was a little over a year ago that we moved houses within our city. My friends ask me how I handle moving somewhat stress free. The key is in the planning and execution of the plan. I don’t think we’ll be moving any time soon, but you never really know. Another question I get asked frequently is did we hire furniture movers? The answer is a big resounding yes! I thought since Summer is right around the corner and that is the time when most people move, I would provide a checklist to help make the move as smooth as possible.
I did not adhere strictly to this checklist, because I would rather be ahead of the game than behind the 8 ball. However, it was a great guideline to keep me on track so that I wouldn’t have a panic attack the night before the movers showed up.
Two Months Before
Sort and Purge:
Go through every room in the house and decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. Be sure to think about whether any items will require any special packing.
Research:
Start investigating moving company options. Having moved across the country and locally, this is an important option. Do your research and choose a reputable moving company that is insured and has excellent ratings. Take your time on this step. They will be handling all of your furniture and personal items that if mishandled could cause you great distress.
Create a Moving Binder:
Use this binder to keep track of everything – all your estimates, your receipts, and an inventory of all of the items you’re moving.
Organize School Records:
Go to your children’s school and arrange for their records to be transferred to their new school.
6 Weeks Before
Order Supplies:
Pick up boxes and other supplies such as tape, bubble wrap, and permanent markers.
Use It or Lose It:
Start using up things you don’t want to move, like frozen or perishable foods and cleaning supplies.
Take Measurements:
Check room dimensions at your new home, if possible, to plan out furniture placement the day of the move.
One Month Before
Choose your Mover:
Confirm with the mover the date, time, cost and other details.
Begin Packing & Labeling:
The minute I found out we were putting the house on the market, I started packing. This is a time consuming task and the sooner you start this, the better off you will be the days heading up to the moving date.
Separate Valuables:
You will want to personally transport jewelry, important files and other valuables to your new home.
Do a Change of Address:
Fill out a change of address form from the post office. This can easily be done online to save you a trip to the post office.
Notify Important Parties:
Notify your bank, utilities, phone, insurance, credit card companies, newspaper, magazine subscriptions of your new address.
One Week Before
Refill Prescriptions:
Make sure you have the appropriate prescriptions on hand for each family member during the move and the transition period of settling into your new home.
Pack your Suitcase:
Aim to finish your general packing a few days prior to your move. Then pack suitcases for everyone in the family with enough clothes to wear for a few days.
A Few Days Before
Defrost the Freezer:
If you are moving your refrigerator, be sure to empty and clean it at least 24 hours prior to the move.
That’s it! If you follow this checklist, you will be all set and somewhat stress-free!
