Hello World! Welcome Friends! A home isn’t just a structure—it’s where life happens. That’s why interior design is about more than just creating a space that looks good; it’s about making a home that works for you, reflects your personality, and supports your lifestyle. Recently, I worked on a renovation project with Northside Developments that brought these principles to life.
This family home was a blend of challenges and opportunities. By the time we finished, it had been transformed into a space that was not only stunning but functional and welcoming. Here are some of the insights and tips I gained from that project to help you on your own home transformation.
1. Begin with Functionality, Add Style Later
When designing a home, the first question I always ask is: “What do you need this space to do for you?” In this project, the kitchen wasn’t just a place to cook—it was the family hub. It needed to accommodate homework sessions, quick breakfasts, and relaxed dinners with friends.
We built a large island bench to serve multiple purposes. It had hidden storage for kitchen gadgets, a durable surface for food prep, and enough seating for the kids to do their homework while mum or dad cooked.
Lesson learned? Start by understanding the function of each room. Once that’s clear, you can layer in the style and personality to make it uniquely yours.
2. Maximize Natural Light and Create Warm Ambiance
Natural light can make a room feel bigger, brighter, and more inviting. In this home, large windows let sunlight flood into the living and dining areas. To soften the light while maintaining privacy, we used sheer curtains that added texture without blocking the view.
We complemented the natural light with layered lighting: pendant lights over the dining table for a statement, under-cabinet LEDs in the kitchen for practicality, and wall sconces in the lounge for a cosy glow.
Pro tip: Dimmer switches are your best friend. They allow you to change the mood of a room with ease—whether you’re hosting a lively dinner or winding down for the evening.
3. Use Color Thoughtfully
Colour is one of the easiest ways to transform a space, but it’s also where people often feel stuck. In this project, we went for a neutral base—think soft greys and whites—and added warmth with earthy accents like terracotta, olive green, and mustard yellow.
One of my favourite moments was designing the kids’ playroom. We used a cheerful yellow feature wall to energise the space, paired with colourful rugs and playful artwork.
If you’re nervous about using color, start small with accessories like cushions, throws, or art.
4. Invest in Smart Storage Solutions
Clutter can ruin even the most beautiful design. In this project, we incorporated clever storage solutions to keep everything organized without sacrificing style.
In the living room, custom-built cabinetry provided ample storage for books, toys, and electronics. The kitchen featured deep pull-out drawers that made it easy to access pots and pans, while the bedrooms had built-in wardrobes with adjustable shelving.
One of my favourite additions was the dining bench with hidden storage. It was practical yet stylish, offering a solution for stashing seasonal items without taking up extra space.
5. Embrace Texture for a Cozy Feel
A well-designed home isn’t just about how it looks—it’s about how it feels. Texture plays a big role in creating warmth and depth.
In this project, we mixed materials to great effect. The living room featured a wool rug, a velvet sofa, and a timber coffee table. In the kitchen, sleek stone countertops were balanced with timber stools and a ceramic backsplash.
Even small details, like a woven basket or a knit throw, can make a big difference. When layering textures, aim for a mix of rough and smooth, soft and sturdy, to create visual interest.
6. Bring the Outdoors In
Nothing breathes life into a home like greenery. For this project, we added plants to almost every room—think tall ferns in the living area, potted herbs on the kitchen counter, and hanging planters in the bathroom.
Not only do plants purify the air, but they also create a sense of calm. If you’re worried about maintenance, start with low-maintenance varieties like succulents or snake plants.
7. Design with Durability in Mind
A family home needs to stand up to daily life, which is why durability was a priority for this renovation. We used engineered timber flooring for its resilience and chose low-VOC paints that are safe for kids and better for the environment.
The kitchen surfaces were designed to handle spills and scratches, while the furniture was selected with wear and tear in mind.
When choosing materials for your home, look for a balance between beauty and practicality. Durable finishes will save you time, money, and stress in the long run.
8. Add Personal Touches
A home should tell your story. For this family, we created a gallery wall in the hallway featuring family photos and children’s artwork. In the dining room, a collection of handmade pottery brought character to the space.
The master bedroom was another highlight. We used soft blues and whites to create a serene retreat, then added a custom headboard and vintage bedside lamps for personality.
What are the things that make your home feel like you? Whether it’s travel souvenirs, heirloom furniture, or a quirky piece of art, find ways to incorporate those into your design.
9. Don’t Forget the Outdoor Spaces
The backyard in this project became an extension of the home. We added a timber deck with built-in seating, perfect for entertaining, and a vertical garden that brought greenery into the small space. Solar-powered lights added ambience while being eco-friendly.
Even if you’re working with a tiny courtyard, there are ways to make it functional and inviting. Outdoor rugs, compact furniture, and planters can transform even the smallest space.
Expert Insight: It’s the Little Details that Matter
James McMurtrie, founder of Northside Developments, often says, “The details make the design.” It’s the perfectly aligned tiles, the soft-close drawers, and the thoughtful lighting choices that elevate a space from good to great.
