Hello World! Welcome Friends! Please welcome guest contributor, Jennifer Bell.
Most people don’t think about the difference between organic and conventional produce when they are choosing what kind of fruits and vegetables to buy for the week. In fact, most people don’t know the difference between organic and conventional. However, these differences are important in order to get quality produce that will keep your body healthy.
This post will detail some of the things that you should know about the difference between organic and conventional produce.
What is the Difference Between Organic and Conventional Produce?
When you go to the supermarket you may see signs above produce that read “organic,” but does that truly mean? You may be wondering if you should buy organic produce or not and whether or not the difference between organic and conventional is significant. Here are some facts to help you decide.
The Lack of Pesticides and Chemicals
Organic farmers steer clear from chemicals and pesticides in regards to their produce. Conventional farmers typically use chemicals to fight off pests, get rid of weeds, and to provide the plant with nutrients. However, these chemicals can be harmful to humans if ingested. Organic farmers on the other hand use natural principles such as composting, and natural pesticides for their produce to keep plants healthy.
The Impact on the Environment
Conventional farming methods impact the environment in negative ways, such as:
- Increased greenhouse gases
- Soil erosion
- Water pollution
- Human health
Organic farming, on the other hand, has little to no impact on the environment, and the impacts that it does have are positive, such as:
- Building healthy soil
- Replenishing ecosystems with cleaner air
- Replenishing ecosystems with clean water as there are no pesticides used
How it Breaks Down
Organic produce will break down easier and faster than conventional produce as it is all-natural and there are no chemicals involved. In fact, a company that specializes in AC repairs in Sicklerville and plumbing services throughout New Jersey pointed out that organic produce breaks down easier in the garbage disposal. This could be because organic produce is usually smaller because it isn’t filled with GMOs to make it larger.
Similarly, both conventional and organic produce will work in a compost pile, however, to truly make a garden/farm organic, the compost should be filled with organic materials as they will break down into fertilizer.
Where to Buy Organic Produce
Conventional produce is easier to find than organic produce. Organic produce is often found at select supermarkets as well as at farmer’s markets and produce stands. Some popular supermarkets that sell organic produce are:
- Trader Joes
- Whole Foods
- Sprouts
However, some other supermarkets that are not known for carrying organic produce may at least have a small organic section; be sure to ask an employee. Organic produce is often a bit more expensive as it is fresher because it is usually locally grown.
It’s True, You Are What You Eat
What you choose to put into your body is important, especially when it comes to produce since fruits and vegetables are staples of a healthy and balanced diet. If you have the option, it will be worth your while to buy organic produce as the benefits far outweigh those of conventional produce. Keep these facts in mind the next time you go food shopping, you won’t regret switching to an organic diet.
