Hello World! Welcome Friends! This is a good time to check in on your New Year’s resolution. How are you doing so far?
- Did you lose 40 lbs?
- Have you started your college degree?
- Are you conversant in another language?
- Has your marriage soared to new heights?

These are the kinds of things people resolve to do. Some people are serial resolvers who make grand promises to themselves that don’t pan out, only to make those same promises the following year with the same results. Surely, something has to give.
The first thing that has to give is you have to stop giving up so early. There is still plenty of time left. So just because you haven’t finished, or even started some of your goals, it does not mean you cannot make serious progress.
You also have to stop making such grandiose resolutions. Don’t promise to lose 40 lbs. Promise to lose 10 lbs. and keep it off. That gives you a makeable goal and a lot of room to work with if you tend to yo-yo. Learning a language can be extremely difficult. You were not going to get a job as a UN translator in a year of studying a language you didn’t know before. Here are a few things you can do to check in on your resolutions and get back on track:
Get Some Insurance
There is no New Year’s resolution insurance. But there is insurance for almost everything else. Go ahead and start looking into answers to the questions you have had for a long time. If you have ever asked yourself, how much life insurance do I need, you are not alone, and answers are trivially easy to find. While you’re at it, be sure to look into disability insurance to provide your family some extra protection.
None of your resolutions mean anything if you remain vulnerable to financial ruin while trying to lose weight. It also doesn’t mean anything if, during the process, your house burns down. If you live in an apartment, you should look into renter’s insurance. Many of the nicer complexes require it before you can sign your lease. The point is that you should reevaluate what it is you wanted to do with that resolution and tackle it more directly. You don’t want to lose 40 lbs. You want to take better care of yourself and your family. Do that by shoring up your insurance. Only then does it make sense to worry about shoring up your waistline.
Salvage What You Can
Don’t worry about your goals for the new year. Think about ways you can salvage your goals in the current year. Even if you have one month to go, that gives you time to do something. You would be surprised at what you can accomplish in a month when you put your back into it.
It doesn’t matter if you accomplish everything on your list or even anything on your list. What matters is that you do something. Get started. Propel yourself forward. When the new year comes, don’t make a whole new set of promises. Use the momentum you have and continue with your previous resolutions until real progress is made. This year’s resolution can be to finish more of what you start. That is a resolution we could all stand to make.
Make at Least One Resolution You Can Finish in a Day
Not all your resolutions have to be easy. But most of them should. Find the best charities and resolve to make at least one donation. You can do it today. In fact, you can do it right now. That will probably be one of your most important and impactful resolutions all year. The key is to seed your list with a few winners that you know you will accomplish quickly. Start with them and get used to the feeling of succeeding. Only then should you think about tackling some of the tougher ones. You might not complete them all. But at the end of the year, you won’t feel like a failure.
You still have some time to make a difference this year. Take care of yourself by shoring up your insurance. Salvage what you can with the time you have. And be sure your future resolutions are seeded with easy wins.
