Hello World! Welcome Friends! As you probably know, DC comic books exist in a world of their own. You can even get DC comic books collectibles from your favorite online comic books store. With a history spanning back to the 1930s, your favorite heroes have experienced countless interactions, worlds, villains and plots. Moreover, as media expanded, so did the storylines. In addition to the weekly comics, superheroes began popping up in television shows, movies, video games and radio dramas.
Today, superheroes have found a permanent home on their brand new streaming service, DC Universe, as well as on the CW. This gives both fans and casual viewers many hours of new content.
If you just joined the DC Universe with their most recent show, Stargirl, you have likely found the fandom to be a confusing maze of crossover references, Easter eggs and a glossary of seemingly important words you’ve never heard before. Here is a quick glossary of terms you will likely come across when surfing the web for more information about your new favorite superhero.

Courtney Whitmore
Courtney Whitmore is a typical, small town high school sophomore who one day dons her stepdad’s old superhero costume and becomes “Stargirl.” In the comic books, she was originally called the “Star-Spangled-Kid,” but changed her name to Stargirl once presented with Starman’s Cosmic Staff. The character was created by Geoff Johns and named after his sister, who passed away in the TWA 800 plane crash. Her first comic book appearance was in Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E #0 in 1999.
Golden Age of Heroes
DC superheroes from the 1940s are part of the “Golden Age of Heroes.” Many of these heroes, like Wildcat and Hourman (as well as Starman and Stripsey), have not had many appearances since their initial iterations. The Stargirl series is unique because it features legacy heroes and attempts a revival of these often forgotten heroes from the 1940s.
Justice Society of America (JSA)
The JSA first appeared in 1940, making it the first team of superheroes ever to appear in comic books. The original team is featured in a photograph in Season One of Stargirl and included Johnny Thunder, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, The Flash, Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Thunderbolt, Wildcat, Hourman, Starman, Stripsey, Sandman and Doctor Mid-Nite. During the first episode of Stargirl, it is revealed that many of the JSA members were killed ten years prior to the Injustice Society. The only two members to survive were Starman and Stripsey (Pat Dugan).
Stargirl follows the experiences of young Courtney Whitmore as she rebuilds the JSA with herself (Stargirl), S.T.R.I.P.E (Pat Dugan), Wildcat (Yolanda Montez), Doctor Mid-Nite (Beth Chapel) and Hourman (Rick Tyler).
The Cosmic Staff
The Cosmic Staff initially belonged to Sylvester Pemberton (Starman) and was passed down to Courtney. The staff was created by Ted Knight, the original Starman from the 1940 comics. The staff gives the wielder the power of flight, as well as the power over cosmic energy manipulation. In the series, Courtney Whitmore pairs the staff with her stepfather’s Cosmic Converter Belt, which gives the wielder enhanced physical abilities and super strength.
Arrowverse
CW began their DC journey with the 2012 series, Arrow. What ensued was a slew of additional television shows and characters all interconnected in a shared universe called the “Arrowverse.”
Currently, six television shows make up the Arrowverse: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman & Lois. They are joined by the web series Vixen and Freedom Fighters: The Ray. The characters from these shows appear in crossover episodes that further expand the Arrowverse world and introduce key plot points. Currently, Stargirl has not been officially confirmed as part of the Arrowverse, although an iteration of The Flash is mentioned in the first episode.
Season 2 of Stargirl is expected in 2021. While no one knows exactly what will occur in the second season, many fans are looking forward to Stargirl’s future adventures, especially as she encounters more characters from the ever-expanding Arrowverse.
