Hello World! Welcome Friends! We have been in our new house for exactly one month. In that time, I have assessed how much natural light comes into our new home. The one area that I think is absolutely gorgeous, but is incredibly dark is the Entry Hall. There are no windows that feed directly into the Entry Hall. The Dining Room has three large windows, but the way the house is situated, there is no direct sunlight coming into those windows. The front of the house faces East with the back getting the afternoon sun. Let me refresh your memory in regards to the current state of the Entry Hall.
First Step Entry Hall
Do not be taken in by this nice, bright picture. This image has been brightened up quite a bit so that you can get an idea of the true gorgeousness of the space. In reality, it is very dark and the walls are nowhere near the brightness depicted in the above picture. And, the trim really resembles baby you know what. After living here for a month, I have decided on the direction I want to take the house. Greg and I have made a commitment to not incur any debt when making our changes. The flooring is one of those areas where we will be saving up for. The hardwoods are gorgeous and we wish they would have been carried throughout the entire downstairs and up the stairs. But, alas, we know what happened.
Flooring Budget
So, the flooring will not be replaced any time soon. We have budgeted $30,000 to replace all of the flooring downstairs to match the hardwoods which will mean probably sanding down the existing hardwoods and re-staining so that we have an exact match. Also, the $30,000 will cover putting hardwoods on the stairs and replacing all of the carpeting upstairs.
Below are some inspiration pictures that are serving as a springboard to start the new decor plan. Mind you, this plan will take a long time to accomplish. My plan is to work each space on its own keeping the flow from room to room in mind. Basically, having One Room Challenges on my own. So to begin the New House Plan, we start with the First Step – the Entry Hall.

What I like about the above picture are the crisp, white walls with the gorgeous panels gracing the stairway wall. Don’t be surprised if you see something similar on our stairway wall. Especially the landing.
The colors for the house will be white with blue and green accents. And, the hardware will be gold…probably polished, but I haven’t decided on the finish just yet.
I adore how the green is such an amazing background for showcasing blue and white.
What’s interesting about the above picture is that I have had this image saved for years under New House Inspiration. I don’t even remember who the source is for this lovely Entry Hall. If any of you know, please leave me a comment so that I can give proper credit. The floors, the ceiling, the molding are all stunning!
I saved the above picture, not for the aqua door, but for the brightness of the space.

The blue in the above picture is deep enough yet bright enough for my plans. I had thought of going with Navy for one of the paint choices, but I don’t want it to read almost black. I’ll explain below the plans for the blue paint.
Here’s another example of the depth I’m looking for in a blue, but not reading too dark.
The paint has already been purchased and I’ve started working on the Entry Hall. I did have the thought to stencil the space with the stencil I used in the Breakfast Nook at the old house, but with much lighter paint choices.
For the walls, I chose Sherwin Williams 7004 Snowbound.
I chose Sherwin Williams 7757 High Reflective White for all of the trim.
And, for the doors, I chose Sherwin Williams 9149 Inky Blue. Don’t worry, I’m not touching the stained doors.
The door that is in the Entry Hall in the image below will be getting the Inky Blue treatment.
The goal is to lighten the space up and draw the eye to the back windows to the water view beyond. I have also been looking at chandeliers, but haven’t landed on any in particular.
So, tell me what you think of the plan. I hope to share a progress post next week…here’s hoping!

Kathryn, love your ideas and the inspiration for the entry hall. I can’t wait to follow your progress. I’m a light and bright girl, so I love the photo with the aqua door, but I think the darker blue you picked out is more in keeping with this house. Thanks for sharing at Happiness is Homemade.
