Hello World! Welcome Friends! Here is a word for you: currywurst. What is it? It’s obviously a German word and in fact, it’s a German dish. It is incredibly popular in Germany from the highest-end restaurants to the private kitchens of the hard-working miners. It’s nearly a staple that goes right along with French fries and toast. Currywurst has claims that it was discovered around 1949 when the inventor observed American soldiers putting ketchup on their hamburgers. Now, it’s served from food trucks, restaurants, and homes and it contributes to the over 800 million sausages eaten every year in Germany. What it is, how it’s made, and where to find it are simpler to spell out than the name itself.
What Is It Exactly?
Again, the question remains: what is it? It’s sausage bites covered in a ketchup-type sauce and sprinkled or infused with curry powder. It is thought that sausage was cheaper than hamburger when this was first conceived. Then either ketchup or a homemade type of red sauce was poured over the sausage. To add a little extra pizzazz, curry powder was either shaken on top or mixed into the sauce. This dish has become a great tribute to how different cultures are symbolized in this one basic recipe so popular in Germany.
How Do You Make It?
There are different ways to make this dish, starting with how the sausages are cooked and the quality of the meat. Many places will serve the sausages boiled and cut up, which makes them softer and more able to draw in the sauce. In other places, the sausages are fried to give them a nice, firm texture that holds up against the heavy sauce. It’s all just a matter of personal preference. As for the tasty sauce, some places simply use ketchup with the curry powder visible on top, while others cook the sauce at length using a homemade mixture and combine the curry into it. Regardless of the methods, the results are similar and the process is fairly simple but adored throughout Germany as well as many other countries.
Where Can You Find It?
Obviously, Germany is filled with places in which to find this delicious combination. There are even interactive graphics you can use when you are in the country and want to know where to find Germanys best currywurst. These graphics help you find restaurants in each town and enable you to view their menus to see who makes this dish.
If you don’t want to travel, however, why not try to make it yourself? Find quality sausage links and cook them in the manner you find most pleasing. Then either start with ketchup and kick it up with other spices and flavors to establish your own sauce, or merely start from scratch. Don’t forget to add the curry, because it just won’t be currywurst without it.
This is a fun dish and very authentic to the German culture, at least as far back as World War II. Why not find a great restaurant that serves it? Maybe make it yourself and start your own tradition with a great homemade recipe to hand down to your family, whether you are German or not.
