Hello World! Welcome Friends! Tonight, please welcome Aurora McCausland to the blog. She’s got some great tips to help us declutter our homes and lives.
Let’s face it. We all have a bit of unwanted clutter. Whether it’s a messy garage, an overflowing toy bin in each of your children’s rooms, or just an overwhelming feeling of disorder when you walk into your home. Clutter affects all areas of your life, not just the physical part that you’d think it would. It makes you feel uneasy, and unable to achieve the peaceful home that you want. Chances are, that clutter has even expanded to your car and bag. It’s okay, we’re all in this cluttered place with you. But it’s time to fix it.
Do it one room at a time
Looking at your cluttered home is overwhelming, and you’ve already given up before you’ve even started. There’s no way that you can overturn your entire home and life in a single day, leaving you with a perfectly organized home overnight. It’s just not possible. So take a moment to come to terms with that fact, and once that’s happened, you can get started. Pick one of the easiest rooms to organize, and start there. If you start with the messiest room, you’ll lose motivation quickly and won’t end up finishing your organization project.
Find some home inspiration
How do you want your house to look? Scroll through Pinterest for about 5 minutes, and you’ll probably have a pretty good idea of what you want it to look like. There are so many inspirational and beautiful homes for you to gain inspiration from. I can guarantee that these homes you’re drooling over are clutter free. These organized spaces could be your reality. Take note of the organization methods these homes employ, and make plans to emulate them in your own home. This will help you feel motivated to organize, since you have a specific idea in mind of what you want your home to look like.
Organization bins are a godsend
Most of the things that are cluttering your home, probably need to stay in your home. So how are you going to take care of this mess? Two words. Organization bins. You know those cute canvas totes you always pass in the home section of Target? Yeah, now you have an excuse to go blow an entire paycheck on some of those. While you’re there, pick up plastic bins for pantry, kitchen, and bathroom organization.
Have a garage sale
When you come across clutter, ask yourself, “have I used this is in the last 6 months?” If it’s not a seasonal item, and you haven’t used it in 6 months, get rid of it. Honestly. If you haven’t thought of it in months, and there isn’t an immediate use for it TODAY, get rid of it. Cleaning everything out is stressful, and often it’s because you know you spent money on all of this clutter. The solution, is to hold a garage sale. Get rid of all of your clutter, by having someone else buy it.
Donate, donate, donate
During the aftermath of a yard sale, chances are, you’ll have items leftover. I’ve never heard of a garage sale where every single thing gets sold. So, what do you do with all of the clutter you’re still left with after your garage sale is over? You’re not putting it back into your house, that’s the first thing you’re going to do. So where is all of this excess clutter supposed to go? The easiest answer to this, is to donate your extra items. Find friends that are in need of the things you’re trying to let go. And if that doesn’t work, take everything to your local thrift store. Often, they will give you a voucher for a discount in their store for donating. Make sure that you ask them for a statement, as you can claim your charitable donation on your taxes! This can help you feel better about all of the clutter you’re getting rid of, and will also help you feel better about the budget for your entire decluttering process
