Hello World! Welcome Friends! Modern office jobs are the norm for most people these days, but they can do a number on your health. When you’re sitting down for long periods of time, you become quite sedentary and don’t exercise. When you are spending a lot of time emailing and sending instant messages, you are spending less time moving between coworkers desks and having a conversation.
Lunch has been relegated to a few minutes for a bite at a cafeteria or scarfing down a sandwich while you continue to work and you don’t have enough time in the day to feel energized enough to go to the gym afterwards. You want to make your office a healthier place for your employees to be; from the Fernic janitorial service you’ve hired to the temperature of the space. As an employer, it’s on you to create a healthier office environment, and there are plenty of ways that you can do it without having to compromise on either your budget or your team. Let’s take a look at some of those ways below.
-
- Ask your team about standing desks: Standing desks not only get you out of your seat, reducing those negative side effects associated with having to sit down all day, it gives you a chance to move around. Some people don’t want to sit still while they work. They want to swing themselves, or they want to step on the spot, or they want to just be able to swing their hips to keep their bodies limber. Being in an office job often means people are spending a lot of time doing absolutely nothing when it comes to movement of their bodies, even if they are moving their minds. You need to give people the option to do so.
- Offer healthy snacks: You should funnel some of your budget to ensuring that there are free healthy snacks available for people all day. Whether you do this in the form of granola bars on flapjacks or you do it in the form of regularly refilled fruit bowls, it doesn’t matter. There are plenty of ways that you can keep your employees healthy in the office and making sure that the snack options are healthy is important as well. You have to remember that people are going to need brain food throughout the day, and if you are offering that for free as a perk of the job, then it’s a good thing. And you should always allocate a portion of your budget to your employee’s health. It’s going to cost you far more money for them to be off sick all the time than it would be for you to speak to a local greengrocer and refill the fruit.
- Make sure there is cold water on the go: You should have regular water stations throughout the office and these should be easy to use. Don’t be that person that adds cone shaped cups where people can’t sit down water at their desks. If you’re worried about spillage, make sure that people are using company branded water bottles that they can refill whenever they feel like it. You need your employees hydrated and this is the way to do it.
- Make sure that you are promoting healthy communication: Do you really want to work in an office that is as quiet as a school? Probably not. People are grown-ups. They should be able to have a social life while they are also working, so make sure that you are encouraging healthy conversation where possible.
