How to Make Platform Bed out of Pallets

Hello World! Welcome Friends!  We, human beings are quite different from each other. Our tastes are different too. Some like to decorate their living room with modern style whereas other likes to have a rustic feel in their bedroom.

If you like to have a rustic feel in your bedroom too, you can make the same looking platform bed out of pallets. It is not expensive as well. Occasionally, if you are lucky, you can get them free. You can get them quickly from your nearest recycling store or supermarket warehouses. Wooden pallets can be used in some ways. You can make other types of furniture like sofas, headboards and many others with these wooden pallets. There are a ton of headboard ideas on the internet to help you create the bed of your dreams. You can quickly create pillow bedding on it and enjoy the rustic feel.

Before going deeper, we think it is time for the term “Pallets” to be defined and understood as well.

A pallet is being used to support goods in a stable position so that they can easily and without any damage be lifted by a crane, pallet jack and much more.   And it is, of course, a transport construction.

But these pallets can be used for making a bed frame too. They are sturdy and cheap. How many pallets are needed for making a bed frame depends largely on the size of the bed frame you need. Besides, if you already have a mattress in your house and you want to place it on the bed frame, then you must make the bed frame according to the mattress’ size. Otherwise, your mattress may not last for years. It will get damaged. So, make sure your pallet’s size matches the size of your mattress.

Things you will need to make a bed frame with pallets:

Before starting making this bed frame, make sure you have arranged everything you need. All you need to build this bed are as follows.

•  2 wooden pallets (sometimes more depending on your bed size)
•  Electric sanding equipment or sandpaper
•  Power saw (for cutting and sizing the pallets)
•  Hammer
•  Nails
•  Bolts
•  Hinges
•  Four to five large caster wheels to ensure its movement
•  Paint (any color you prefer)

As you have all necessary things in hand, it is time for the bed frame to be made perfectly. Measure your bed frame size regarding your mattress to be placed on it. Otherwise, if your bed frame is larger than the mattress you have, your mattress may be damaged. So, measure it first before starting.

So, let’s start making your platform bed which will add a lovely rustic feel to your bedroom.

Step One:

At first, if you already have the mattress to be placed on it or ordered a specific size (full, queen, king, etc.), size your pallets according to your mattress’ size. Use your power saw to size these pallets regarding the mattress’ size. It is the essential part of making the bed frame. Otherwise, your mattress may damage.

Step Two:

These pallets are very rough at first which can be a cause to snag your lovely mattress and bed sheets. So, you need to sand them with the sander or sandpaper. Both work great. If you do the process with the sander, it will take less time and effort. On the other hand, if you want to do the same thing yourself with sandpaper, it will take more time and effort. But doing it yourself with sandpaper will make it sweeter and more convenient that the machine. This process prevents your mattress and bed sheets from getting splinters. You don’t need to get worried because after doing the sanding process, it keeps its rustic feel indeed.

Step Three:

For better strength, bolt the wooden pallets together. Join the pallets together using a small plank and nail them with the sides of the pallets. In this step, you may need more pallets depending on your mattress’ size. But the process of joining them together is almost the same as before.

Step Four:

This step is optional but recommended. You can paint your pallets any color you like. It gives the pallets added look and at the same time longevity as well. Allow the pallets some time to dry with the paint color. Otherwise, it will hinder you to complete the whole process with ease.

Step Five:

To ensure its easy movement, you can add wheels in the four corners. You can also add an extra wheel in the middle too. Sometimes, you may need to move your bed frame to another location you want. As the bed frame is fairly heavy, it will be difficult for you to move. But make sure you use the wheels that can be locked for preventing its unwanted movement. In most cases, if your floor is evenly plain, it does not move, and you may not need the wheels with a lock.

Step Six:

Now, your platform bed with its rustic feel is almost ready to use. Place the mattress, sheets, and pillows on it perfectly and start enjoying the rustic feel you want.

Step Seven (Optional):

In this optional step, you can add a glowing look to your bed that can make it more realistic with the rustic feel. You can add an LED strings inside the frames and get them connected to an outlet.

Like other bed frames, it has some limitations as well. It is almost impossible to use it as for some storage purpose. This bed frame is not designed for storage. But you can have some storage space as there are so many other ways to make the bed frame with pallets too.

Through these steps as mentioned above, you can get a platform bed easily. In comparison to another bed frame, a pallet bed frame is stronger to use for any purpose. Your kids can play on it and even can jump. And you can say goodbye to your worries when they play on the bed frame. It is cheaper than others and convenient too.
