Hello World! Welcome Friends! One of the biggest expenses people face is maintaining and decorating their home. It is hard to find the money for paint and tools when you are struggling to pay your fuel and food bills, but it is still possible to live in a nice home even if you live on a tight budget.
Borrow tools
The first tip is to borrow tools whenever you can. Items like ladders and power tools are expensive. If you do not already own them, ask a friend or family member if you can borrow theirs. Most people are happy to share, especially if you are willing to do the same or are willing to give them a hand when they need help.
In some areas, people have set up street banks like this one. These community-based organizations connect people who are willing to share tools and equipment with those who need it.
Free or virtually free materials
If you are lucky, you will have a strong recycling community in your area. These charities are set up to give people with items that they do not want the chance to give them away rather than let them end up being put into landfill. They are great places for picking up free furniture and homeware, but, surprisingly, you can often pick up paint, wood, bricks and other DIY materials through them.
Cheap artwork
If you are good at drawing and art by far the cheapest way to personalize a room is to hang your own paintings on the wall, or better still do a wall mural. Over the years, I have seen some fantastic examples of this in the homes of friends and family.
However, I realize that this is not an option for everyone. We are not all budding artists, but, fortunately, that does not matter. There are still plenty of ways to get your hands on free, or virtually free, artwork for your walls.
For example, you can often pick up paintings from garage sales. Charity shops are another good place to pick up items for your home. The next time a family member asks what you want for your birthday you could ask for a favorite photograph to be turned into a painting to hang on your wall.
Another, fun and low cost option is to use road signs to decorate your son’s room or maybe add interest to your office space. Just in case you are scratching your head wondering how to get your hands on them, I am not advocating your going through the neighborhood stealing signs. There is no need to engage in this type of illegal act because you can easily buy some great ones for just a few dollars, including fun, customized ones. They make good gifts too.
