Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you have Netflix, you have most likely seen David Attenborough: A Life On Our Planet. It is a pointed reference to all of the things that we can do to help our planet. Creating an environment that is welcoming to wildlife is important, and it is something that we can do in our own backyard.
Fields, forests, and other natural spaces have been wrecked, ravaged, and ruined in part due to global warming and in part due to the construction of houses.
You might be surprised just how easy it really is to have a space that is welcoming to birds, insects, and even amphibians.
Many individuals are doing what they can. But real success can only come if there is a change in our societies and in our economics and in our politics. – Sir David Attenborough.
Pond
A source of water is something that is almost sacred for many animals. If you have a pond, it would be ideally placed somewhere that has a little bit of shade and some of the sunshine too. This will mean that it has the perfect environment for growing those all-important pond plants and welcoming to a wide range of wildlife. A pond is a pleasing thing to have in the back yard and can be a wonderful feature.
It is important that you learn how to keep ponds clean and clear.
Wildflowers
Almost every type of garden can benefit from wildflowers. They are unruly and come in a range of colors, and this is what makes them so wonderful. Birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators will flock to them, and your garden will be alive all spring and summer. Something that you might be concerned about is that if you are considering patios and garden furniture, you might put off the wide range of wildlife.
However, even the smallest area filled with flowers will make a huge impact.
Bird boxes
Birds not only sound wonderful on summer mornings, but they add to the entire ecosystem. You can encourage them to lay eggs safely in your garden by having a bird box. This will protect them from many predators. Usually, if a bird feels a space is safe, they will come back years on end.
Insect Hotel
This is a fun activity that can take a few hours to complete. Creating a hotel for little insects to enjoy really adds to the ecosystem within your garden. You can build a bug house with twigs, stones, leaves, and more. Bamboo is ideal as it is hollow and stackable. This environment will give the insects somewhere that is dark, damp, and safe.
Although you might not want to see any bugs yourself, they will provide a food source for other creatures, help with pollination, composing the fallen leaves and other dead plants, and more.
Creating a space that can be home to many different types of wildlife is a small but impactful way to encourage your local ecosystem and animals in the area to thrive. This is a small but meaningful way to do your part to ensure that as many species as possible stand a change in the future.
