Hello World! Welcome Friends! When you were younger, did any of your family members tell you not to waste food because there were children in other countries who would love to have the food you’re wasting? If you didn’t, just know that lots of people did have family members who told them that. It was a guilt trip to get you to eat all of your food and become less wasteful.
Well, the truth of the matter is that we as humans waste all the time, and not just food, either. But the ways we waste is hugely impacting our environment and in a negative way. You may not realize it but 2019 was the year of the “climate crisis.” Wildfires in California were running rampant, 40.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide was released in the air, and plastic wasn’t just in the bottoms of oceans but also traces were found in our food!
Studies have actually shown that a quarter-million people may die each year resulting from climate changes in the coming years…
So what’s behind all of this manmade global destruction? Us. The lifestyle choices we make on a daily basis impact our environment. There’s no way to undo the damage we’ve done in the past but we can make changes today in our daily lives to make the changes the world needs.
Everything from sustainable home improvements to eliminating plastic water bottles, there are many different ways you can positively contribute to the environment and reduce your footprint. All you have to do is make some of these simple and easy lifestyle changes.
Lifestyle Changes to Live More Sustainable and Waste-Free
Don’t Throw Away Your Food Scraps
If you want to be less wasteful, one thing you have to do is stop being wasteful with your food scraps. Sure they may be the parts of food you don’t want or need but you don’t have to trash them. Instead, start a compost bin with your food scraps. This is going to help reduce weed growth and give your plants all the nutrients it needs to grow.
Ditch the Water Bottles and Invest in a Water Filtration System
If you’re like most people, you don’t really enjoy tap water, and depending on where you live, tap water can have an odd taste to it. But instead of buying packs and packs of bottled water, invest in a water filter for your sink or a water filter pitcher.
Brita pitchers are great water filtration systems that provide great tasting water all from your tap. True enough the Brita pitcher is made from a hard plastic, but it’s still much less wasteful than buying water bottles because the pitcher is reusable; the only maintenance and upkeep of the pitcher is switching out the filter when it’s time.
Switch to Alternative Electricity
You might be a little puzzled thinking electricity is electricity, right? Well, yes that’s true but the area of concern is how the electricity is generated. Most traditional electric companies generate electricity from fossil fuels, which is horrible for the environment. With alternative electricity, it’s generated from renewable energy, like the sun, water, and wind.
Since the emergence of deregulated energy, certain states have been able to enjoy electricity at lower rates from renewable energy. But you have to check to see if this is available in your state. Some states have the option of comparing electric rates while states like New York have New York community solar, where electricity is generated on solar farms.
This type of electricity is not only going to lower your electric bill but it’s wonderful for the environment as well.
Switch to Reusable Cloths Instead of Paper Towels
Paper towels are single-use only and they’re extremely wasteful and bad for the environment. An easy way to get a head start in your efforts of being less wasteful is to stop using paper towels and use reusable cloths and cloth napkins.
Whether you’re wiping down the counters or wiping your hands, reusable towels can do the same thing as paper towels and last longer. When you’re done, you simply put them in the dirty clothes basket with the rest of your laundry.
There are many more ways to be less wasteful in your life but you have to start small. Find the areas that will be the easiest to make the adjustments so you can accomplish those goals and build your way up to more less wasteful efforts.
