Hello World! Welcome Friends! Interior design is an art that one has to learn and acquire the skills for transforming any space into a well-designed room. Whether you are designing the interior of your home or any room by yourself or hiring a professional interior designer who has experience of working with HDB interior design, it helps to understand the basics of interior design and what it includes.
Walking into a well-designed room generates a feeling that helps to associate with space very quickly by developing positive vibes as you can sense how everything feels put together and cohesive. It feels like the room is just right for you with every element enhancing your pleasure and satisfaction. But to achieve it in your own home you must have some basic knowledge about the design principles, and once you can couple it with practice and experimentation, creating a beautiful home is well within your reach.
Various elements of interior design like color, form, mass, line, and texture work together to form a unified whole that works in tandem with the components of composition like balance, rhythm, harmony, etc. to create the comprehensive design that thrills people.

Balance
A sense of equilibrium in design provides immense satisfaction to viewers and to achieve it; designers must learn the technique of maintaining balance in design. It consists of approximating the visual weights of objects or equalizing it. The shape alone does not contribute to creating balance, but color, texture, and pattern also contribute significantly.
There can be three type of balances – asymmetrical, symmetrical, and radial.
- Symmetrical or formal: Formal spaces or even traditional ones usually have the space split into two sides that are identical to one another. Symmetrical balance is appropriate for such spaces, and it is easy to create a plan for placing objects to maintain balance. Space creates an intuitive feeling that triggers easy ideas of balancing the objects like putting two chairs on both sides of a coffee table. Since the design elements are repeated on both sides, it is easy to achieve balance, but there are chances of it becoming boring or monotonous if you are not careful.
- Asymmetrical or informal: Unlike the above example where space has symmetrical lines in the design that facilitate duplication, asymmetrical design is quite informal, and balancing of the visual weights of colors, lines, forms, and texture create balance without duplication. Unlike symmetrical balance that is more orderly, asymmetrical balance can be more complex but interesting. A typical example is placing two chairs on either side of a sofa for balancing.
- Radial balance: You can get a hint of the balance from the name itself that it consists of creating balance around a central focal point from which the elements for balancing keep radiating. The most common visualization of radial balancing is placing chairs around a round table. In this type of balancing, there will be a repetition of form, color, and texture.
Harmony
To make any design effective and appealing, it is important to ensure that all the elements create an orchestrated effect by working together that conveys a unified message. When this happens, it creates harmony. Harmony in design contributes to generating a sense of restfulness. You may have various forms that vary greatly in shape, size, and texture, but it is possible to create harmony among it by using even a single color.
Rhythm
Repetition in the design must never be boring, and to achieve it, you must depend on infusing rhythm in design by creating patterns of repetition and contrast that generate visual interest. Typically, you can use the same shape or color at regular intervals to achieve the effect. Rhythm is very important in interior design because it directs the eyes to various parts of the room. Just as one thought leads to another, similarly spreading a color thoughtfully across various objects can help to create rhythm. When you use the color of the pillow in the rug and even in a painting, the intentional repetition creates a rhythm that associates the elements together to create attraction.
Emphasis
The appeal of design lies in maintaining balance but with varied emphasis on the objects. It means attaching a varying degree of importance to the objects used in the design. You cannot give equal importance to all objects and design elements in a room because it would tend to look boring or even scattered.
To create an appealing design, you must first choose an anchor around which you must build the entire design with a varied emphasis on the elements according to the need. There are always some points of interest within architectural spaces like a beautiful window or a fireplace that can become the focal point of the design. Once you choose the focal point, you can enhance the design by placing furniture around it that helps to emphasize the focal point. If the room lacks some point of interest, you can create one by using some unusual or large piece of furniture or grouping some furniture.
Proportion and scale
Good understanding of proportion and scale contribute to the success of the interior design, and you must be clear about the concept to apply it correctly. Proportion means the ratio in the size of one part to another and how the size of one object relates to another or to space where you place it is the scale. Placing an oversized sectional object in a small room will not be according to scale.
Proportional relationships make designs look more pleasing, and you must be able to envisage how things would look when used in the design. Taking the path of trial and error to get a feel of things might prove quite costly. You can follow a simple formula about the proportion that the ancient Greeks introduced. The ratio between the smaller section and the larger section should be the same as the ratio between the larger section and the whole. You will find the truth about it in nature, and the formula of Golden Section as it is called has guided artists and architects through ages.
