Hello World! Welcome Friends! Throughout our lifetime we will form many friendships. Some will last and some may not. It’s natural for friends to drift apart, particularly when there’s a change in common interests or they face a sudden physical distance. However, there are some friends we know for certain we want to keep around, even when life gets in the way.
There are ways to prevent a friendship from slipping, provided both friends are equally committed to staying in each other’s lives. Showing your friend that you still care about them, even if you don’t see each other as much as you’d like will help to maintain your relationship, along with utilizing social media platforms. Read on for tips on keeping in touch with friends, even when distance or time is an issue.
Remember Special Occasions
The easiest way to show a friend you care about them is to acknowledge the important moments in their life. Send a card on their birthday or to congratulate them on their new job. A personalized card will add a special touch and will stand out from the countless others they’re bound to receive. Include an inside joke or a reminder of a memory you’ve shared together.
Personalized Christmas cards are ideal for the festive season. Include a family photo or a drawing one of your kids did at school. Not only does it add a lovely touch to the card, but it is also a great way to share what you have been up to and stay connected with people.
Have a calendar or diary to keep track of special events like anniversaries and the birthdays of your friends’ children and be sure to get in touch on these dates too. Send a card or go old-school and pick up the phone.
Take Advantage of Social Media
Social media gets a bad rep, but it can be a great way to keep in touch with friends who live far away or don’t have much time to meet up. Platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger allow you to create private groups, so you can chat to multiple people at once, and easily make plans.
One major benefit of social media platforms is they don’t change the way phone numbers do. Before our world became so tech savvy, friends would often move house or change their contact details and forget to tell people. Now, thanks to Facebook and Instagram, you don’t have to wait for a friend to get in touch and provide their new number, you can reach them at the touch of a button.
Make Time to Catch Up
As we get older and settle down, our list of responsibilities grows, and it can be harder to spend quality time with friends. However, a friendship is like a plant, it needs to be nourished to survive. Plan a day when you’re both available to spend some time together. Go for drinks, check out a new brunch spot or get out in the fresh air for a walk.
If you’re struggling to leave the house, or there’s a large distance between you, don’t give up! Organize a virtual catch up instead. Pour yourselves a glass of wine and have a good old-fashioned natter or invite a group of friends to join you and have a games night or DIY cocktail evening.
