Hello World! Welcome Friends! Moving out of your old place and into your new place is an exciting time for everyone involved. You’re able to start fresh in your new home. When moving out of your old place, take advantage of the situation by throwing out or donating any junk you might have.
When moving into your new home, only take with you the things that you want and need to create a clean and healthy environment. Once you’ve cleared out your old home, it’s time to do some deep cleaning with the help of a move out cleaning checklist.
If you were renting the place, then there are a few requirements that you must follow to get your deposit back. If you’re selling the place, remember that small details do matter when getting the most money for your home.
To ensure that your old place is cleaned as thoroughly as possible, continue reading below. Here is our move out cleaning checklist to help you stay on task!
Cleaning Basics
Before we dive into the specific cleaning tasks that you need to cover, let’s begin by going through some cleaning basics. Without knowing how to clean properly, even deep cleaning won’t be sufficient. Here’s what you need to know.
Clean Task by Task
Gather your supplies and then begin to clean task by task. You might feel tempted to clean room to room, but cleaning task by task will help you get the job done much quicker. For example, if you begin by dusting the fans, you’ll want to dust all fans and other surfaces in the house at one time.
When done, you can set your duster aside since you’ll be done using that tool. It’s much easier than dusting one room, setting it down, then picking it back up to dust another room. This way of doing things also helps you stay on task.
Start with the Highs
You also want to remember to start with the highs and end with the lows. If you begin cleaning with the lows, you’ll find yourself having to go back over them when you’re done with the highs. For example, imagine cleaning the floors and then dusting the fans.
Dust will fall from the fan and the ceiling, even if you don’t see it happen, and then your floors will need another cleaning. Save yourself the time and headache by cleaning top to bottom.
Tackle the Dry Tasks
All “dry” cleaning tasks should be completed first. These tasks include dusting, sweeping, and vacuuming. If you haven’t dusted and swept away all of the dust and dirt first, cleaning with sprays will end up in you spreading dust and dirt around in circles.
Cleaning Checklist
Now that you know how to clean the right way, it’s time to start going through the checklist. Below are a few things that you’ll want to check off before moving out of your old place.
Check the Walls
Before leaving, check all of the walls for any nails or screws. Be sure to take all nails and screws and any other items out of the walls. When done, seal all holes to bring the wall back to its original state.
Any scratches, dents, and other damages should be corrected as well. Take a damp cloth and wipe down all of the baseboards and walls. If the drywall used is a non-water resistant drywall, then use a dry duster to dust them off.
Clean the Windows
Use a window cleaner and wash all of the windows. You should also take a few minutes to clean any glass surfaces in the home as well, such as mirrors. Don’t forget to clean the windowsills and blinds, as both of these items tend to collect dust easily.
Wash the Floors
Sweep all hard surfaces and vacuum the carpet. If there are stains, be sure to have them removed. For the dry surfaces, use a steam mop to wash them back to perfection.
If need be, hire a cleaning service to help you achieve the best possible outcome.
Inspect Light Fixtures
All light fixtures in the home should be inspected as well. If there’s a bulb out in any light fixture, take the time to replace it. Then, dust and clean out any light covers or lampshades.
The light switches should also be wiped clean and free of dust.
Check Off Room by Room
Before heading out the door and saying goodbye to your old home for forever, end your checklist by doing a sweep of each room. Walk through each and every room in the home and ensure that everything looks clean and ready for a new tenant.
The Kitchen
Are all cabinets and drawers empty? Clean off all countertops and kitchen sinks. Check that all appliances left behind are cleaned out and wiped off.
Open your fridge one last time and ensure that the entire fridge is cleaned out and empty. The stove and dishwasher should be empty and wiped down as well.
The Bathrooms
If the bathrooms have exhaust fans inside them, be sure that these are dusted. Clean all tiles, the shower/bathtub, the toilet, the sink, and the medicine cabinets. You don’t want to forget to open your mirror medicine cabinet and clean out all of your medicines before leaving.
The Bedrooms and Living Rooms
For your bedrooms and living rooms, do a simple walk through ensuring that everything is cleaned well and that you’re not leaving anything behind. Check all corners and behind all big furniture items for any cobwebs.
