Hello World! Welcome Friends! Painting your home exterior can be a bit of a pain, but if it’s done right, it should last you a long time. Unfortunately, you will have to get the ladder out at some point and give your home another coat, but if possible, you should avoid doing it before it’s really necessary so you can save yourself a lot of time and money. These are some of the signs that tell you it’s time to repaint your home exterior.
Fading
Often, people jump the gun when painting their home exterior because they see that it’s starting to look a bit dull, so they assume that it needs new paint. However, that isn’t always the case because that dull look is often caused by dirt and grime that builds up on the outside of your house. There isn’t much you can do to avoid this, but it doesn’t mean that you need to paint again just yet. Instead, call in a company like Top Down Exterior Cleaning and have them pressure wash your home exterior and pavement area. You might notice a huge difference and the paint will look good as new. In a lot of cases, the paint itself is actually in fine condition, it just has a lot of dirt on it and once you clean off the dirt, you don’t need to worry about repainting just yet.
However, there is a chance that the paint itself is fading, and it’s important to know the difference. Darker colors will fade faster than light colors and when you notice that it has a sun bleached look to it, that’s a sign that you should start picking up some paint. You should always try cleaning it first to see if that brings back the original color but if it doesn’t, you need to paint.
Peeling
Peeling is one of the most obvious signs that your paint is past its best. If you use a low-quality exterior paint, you’ll find that the paint peels much faster. So, when it is time to repaint, you should always spend a bit of money on something that will last. Unfortunately, even the best paint will eventually start peeling due to sun exposure and harsh weather in the winter. When it starts coming off in big flakes, that leaves your walls completely unprotected and it looks awful, so you should paint it as soon as possible.
Bubbling and Cracking
If you spot any bubbles on the surface of your paint, that’s always a cause for concern. Usually, these bubbles are caused by mold under the surface of the paint, and you’ll want to deal with that right away. Not only do they look bad, but you’ve also got a lot of mold growing close to the house and you don’t want it to start spreading into the interior. Big cracks are another common sign of mold, and if you notice either, you need to give your home a fresh coat of paint.
Chalking
Chalking is a subtle issue that people are less likely to spot. You can’t usually tell just by looking at the paint, so run your hand along it from time to time. If you get a chalky residue on your hand, your paint is chalking and it will need to be replaced because it can be a health hazard.
This is a process that happens to a lot of exterior paints when they are exposed to harsh weather over the years. Breathing in chalky paint is bad for your health and it can pollute the surrounding environment too, so you should deal with it sooner rather than later.
Rotting Wood
If your home has wooden cladding on it and you notice that it’s rotting, your paint isn’t doing its job. Exterior paint is there for aesthetic reasons but it’s also there to provide a layer of protection, which is especially important where materials like wood are concerned. When you notice that protection has disappeared, you need to paint again and look for a better quality of paint that provides more protection.
The End of The Paint’s Lifespan
This is one that people don’t consider as often because they’re looking for all of the other signs on this list. But every paint has a useful lifespan and this will be indicated on the can. Usually, when it is coming to the end of its lifespan, you will start noticing other issues with it. However, that isn’t always the case and the paint might seem fine, even though it has aged out. You should still repaint though because it won’t provide the right level of protection if it’s too old.
If you notice any of these problems with your exterior paint, it’s time for a fresh coat. Check out this great guide to help you do a better job.
