Hello World! Welcome Friends! The simple answer to this question is yes. It is possible to do an epoxy flooring yourself. However, if you choose to utilize this compound on your floor it is important that you do it the right way. If you have any doubts you should call the professionals, they can effectively apply the epoxy floor and finish the floor perfectly for you.
Where to Epoxy Coat
Epoxy coating is effectively a paint substance mixed with special chemicals. The painting part of the compound is the resin while the hardener is the chemical agent. The two are kept separately until you are ready to apply the floor. Once they are mixed the chemical reaction starts and, as Epoxy Depot Chicago experts note – you have approximately two hours to apply the floor. It will then harden and is resistant to stain, spills, water, and you can even drop items on it without cracking it.
That makes it a good option for almost any room in your home, especially garages, kitchens, and bathrooms. The fact that it can be purchased in a variety of colors and styles makes this type of flooring an even more attractive proposition.
It should be noted that there are three different types of epoxy floor coatings:
Solid Epoxy
Solid epoxy is basically the purest and strongest form of this flooring. It is the most difficult and strongest of all the epoxies and also dries rapidly. As such it is recommended you let the professionals lay this version. Experienced epoxy flooring professionals are well-versed in handling any type of epoxy and ensuring a smooth finish. Just be sure to do your research and choose a reputable company with plenty of experience in solid epoxy installation.
Solvent Based
Solid epoxy doesn’t contain solvents, this version of the epoxy flooring is 40 to 60% solid epoxy and the rest is solvents. These provide better adherence as they can soak into the concrete floor. You will find an array of color options but the solvents can be hazardous when applying. That is why it is best to wear a respirator and follow the instructions while doing your floor.
Water-Based
The third option is water-based. That means it is also 40 to 60% solid epoxies but the rest is water. This is the easiest one to find and you can pick it up at your local DIY center. It is also the easiest to apply, contains no dangerous solvents, and can be easily done by yourself at home.
If you choose to do your own epoxy flooring you will need to follow the correct procedure.
Clear the Room
The first stage is to empty the room and mark of the edges, this makes the cutting in easier. You will need to put all the items from the room into a safe place where they can be left for several days.
Clean It
Cleaning the room thoroughly is essential before you lay the epoxy coating. It is best to sweep, then vacuum, then mop.
Once this is done and you are sure the floor is clean and grease-free, you can etch it using the kit that comes with the epoxy floor.
Mix It
Mixing is straightforward, follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. But, remember that you now have roughly two hours to apply the epoxy. Never mix until you are ready to apply.
Apply it
Use a paintbrush to cut in the edges and a roller to do the main section. You can then leave it to dry. After 12 hours you can give it a second coat but you shouldn’t walk or drive on it for several days.
Then, enjoy!
