We have been quite fortunate and have yet to replace a roof. In our previous home, we did lose a couple of shingles when Hurricane Ike blew through. Unlicensed people will often give you a very low price for their work in the hopes that you will hire them. Is the roofing contractor covered by insurance?
You will need to see the contractor’s proof of insurance before you allow this person to begin roofing repairs on your home. Do not simply ask the contractor if he or she is insured and take the person’s word for it. Only allow work to begin after you have seen documentation proving there is a valid insurance policy covering the contractor and all of his or her helpers. This will keep you protected in case any damage to your home is caused by the contractor or other workers. Even the most experienced roofing contractors will have accidents occasionally. This is why you need to make sure you will get compensated by the contractor’s insurance provider if damage is done to your home or possessions.
