Hello World! Welcome Friends! While water is a precious resource and shouldn’t be considered a problem, in some areas, the swollen groundwater, gushing storms, and clay soils combine, presenting you with challenging wet sites. Some homeowners even have to deal with the horror of a wet basement. All hope is not lost, though. Here are a few tips that will help you transform your garden’s wet, soggy areas from a problem to an asset.
Build a Deck With a Pathway
You can turn that wet, soggy area into a relaxing, barbecue spot by erecting a highly durable deck on the ground with well-defined circulation paths. This is because some wet sites can only become functional if turned into hardscape. The most preferred option when it comes to this is to go for the wood decking and boardwalk-style paths. Make sure you use dock wood options ideal for wet environments to maintain the structure’s integrity while avoiding rot and decay.
Set Up a Rain Garden
With the rain garden, you can temporarily hold water as it slowly socks back into the ground. It acts as a water catchment area but for a short time. When building a rain garden, you make a shallow depression into the ground about 6” deep and plant tough, deep-rooted plants, including grasses, shrubs, and perennials. The type of plants should be able to withstand occasional inundation while enhancing the soil’s ability to absorb water. Ensure you place your rain garden about 10 feet away from buildings as high structures can make it impractical. In addition, build it in an area where the soil is compacted.
Incorporate a Drain System
By adding a drain to a low spot in your garden, you can drive excess water underground. While it is still okay to allow the water to flow into a dry well or soil freely, setting up a French drain can do a better job of draining the water while moving it through your entire yard. You can build your French drain by creating a surface-level grate and connecting it to a perforated piping strategically placed in an underground ditch. Consider covering the ditch with rocks or gravel to conceal the pipes and enhance water filtering. The water will move through the piping as it filters into the soil through the holes on both sides of the ditch.
Make Plans for a Pond
A pond will give your landscape a serene year-round focal point while capturing water that would probably overpower your garden’s drainage system. It will also help create a mini ecosystem where fish, birds, amphibians, and other wildlife will find a home. Be strategic with where you situate your pond to ensure you can easily direct excess water into the water feature. You can place it where there is a natural slope, end of a swale, or a depression.
Come Up with a Creek Bed
One of the most effective ways to collect excess rainwater without secretly snaking downspout extenders and hoses across the yard is to add a creek bed. Creek beds work by directing water away from your house and nearby structures. However, you must ensure the available slope is enough to keep the water flow moving. Use pebbles, gravel, or small stones to line the floor of the streambed and edge its sides with boulders or an array of stones. Add varying width and curves to your creek bed to give it a natural look and enhance your landscape’s visual appeal.
With the right ideas and strategies, every space in your garden can be useful. Set a budget and combine a few tips to transform the space into an oasis. Identify what can work in your garden and what can’t and focus on those options that can yield notable results.
