Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many people started working from home in 2020 when the pandemic hit. There are multiple advantages to remote working practices – including the flexibility of setting your schedule and saving time and money on commuting. However, there are also downsides, and many people struggled to find a dedicated space to work in their homes.
A home office is a luxury many workers do not have. Many people worked from their bedrooms, living rooms and even hallways during the pandemic. As restrictions ease, some employers are encouraging flexible working practices whereby employees can divide their time between home and the office. If you enjoy working from home, it might be time to dedicate an area of your home to work so you can be more productive and focused.
Here are a few things to consider when setting up your workspace at home.
Choose the Right Place
You need a clear distinction between work and home life. Avoid working in bed, on the couch or in an area that could be dedicated to relaxation. A rarely used guest room or storage area may have the potential to become your new workstation. Clear the space out and make sure there is enough room for a desk, chair and filing cabinet. When people stay in the guest room, you can use the desk as a bedside table or move it elsewhere. Multifunctional spaces are essential in smaller homes, like city apartments and one-bedroom houses.
Find the Right Equipment
You need to be comfortable in your workstation so you can focus on the task at hand instead of back pain. Invest in an ergonomic desk chair that supports your body and is the right height for your desk. It can be tempting to buy a beautiful velvet chair that looks amazing – but is uncomfortable. Choose practicality over aesthetics.
You need a desk that is large enough for your computer, screen monitors and documents. The standard industry height for a desk is 29 inches – you could also go for a sit-stand desk if you prefer to work standing up.
You should also make sure you’re properly connected with a fast and reliable internet connection.
Finally, invest in a high-quality screen monitor and desktop computer over a compact laptop. Laptops are great for commuters, but they can also encourage poor posture and strain injuries.
Lighting
Natural daylight can keep you feeling fresh, happy, and ready to take on the day. Place your desk by a window if possible – or buy a daylight lamp to reap the benefits of natural light. If your workstation is in a dark room, make sure to spend your lunch break outside to get some daylight.
Once you have all the practical elements down, add a few personal touches with photos and plants. Your workspace should be a place you want to spend time in.
