Hello World! Welcome Friends! Today, several homeowners are opting for skirting boards/baseboards as a part of major home decor! Simply put, door architraves, skirting as well as cornices got very well arranged when the walls used to be damp and plastered, unlike the smooth textures we have today. In times past, the plaster had a rough finish and required a junction at the ceiling and floor. Hence, the skirting/baseboard function was discovered to cover the bottom part of the plastered wall. Additionally, the skirting/baseboard also covered the increasing damp houses much before the wet proof courses were the norm.
Today, you can choose from the numerous skirting boards that online service providers have to offer. To know more about this, you can get in touch with Metres Direct Skirting. Not every homeowner is aware of the way to choose a skirting board. The following guidelines can help.
Do you need a skirting board?
The skirting boards are essential for developing junctions between the construction materials. It also covers the uneven and untidy joins. It also offers a barrier that secures your home wall from the dents and scrapes that are created by pets, machines, and people moving through the house. However, skirting boards provide even more than other essential advantages. It is one of the core components of interior detailing.
Tips for selecting the best skirting board
Take some time to think about the era and style your property reflects! It is essential because then you can choose the correct skirting board complimenting your house. Picking up a skirting board that doesn’t compliment your home style and design, can ruin the look. Hence, it is essential to blend your themes well.
For instance, if your house has a Victorian and Gregorian decor, then you have tall rooms. Chances are your ceiling will be at the height of 3m and more. If you have more Edwardian decor, the average height of the ceiling will be slightly less. The new age houses today have 2.4m ceilings or lesser than that. Hence, you need to choose a skirting board that has the best proportion. If your ceiling has a small or average height, make sure you don’t opt-in for a massive board inside a small room, as that will have an overwhelming effect.
Make sure that you consult with a designer or an architect. A shadow gap or recessed skirting is essential to plan ahead of time. There is added cost concerning the labor and material.
Other important factors
Do you have pets moving around in your house? If yes, then you need to think about the damages that can occur at the lower wall parts. You can always opt-in for a new age board using a simple profile. However, if you want to paint the board, it makes sense to opt-in for a cost-effective MDF instead of timber. The tiles that are on the floor in a bathroom or hall can get used for skirting as well. It will create an impression of broader width by making use of the same material akin to the floor. The rules aren’t absolute. However, consult an architect to plan well.

This is the first time I’ve heard baseboards called skirting boards. Skirting boards definitely make for a cleaner look between walls and floors. We don’t have any around the ceiling, but I would love to add some.
