Hello World! Welcome Friends! No one wants to come back from a beautiful trip to find that their house has been broken into, but there are security measures you can take to protect your home.
Before you leave, it is important to make sure that you put measures in place and that they are working properly.
Lock Everything
While it seems like common sense, remember to block off all possible entrances to your home, including dead-end bolts. You always lock your main door when you go to work, but there are some windows and doors that usually remain unlocked. Before going on holiday, go through your house and close and lock absolutely all windows and doors.
Look for Potential Weak Spots
A closed front door does little good if other entrances, such as basement doors, are left unprotected and can be cut through with readily available tools. It’s better to lock them from the outside.
The other weakness is the garage door. Older models open easily, while modern models can easily be broken into. It’s even better to turn off automatic garage door openers since their absence renders them inoperable. Also, pay special attention to door locks that separate the garage from the rest of the house.
Invest in a Security Camera
A well-placed surveillance camera with a wide-angle lens and a motion sensor could mean the difference between catching a burglar or not.
Get an internal or external security system that activates upon motion and sends an alarm and video clip to your smartphone so you can take immediate action. This camera also allows you to stream what’s going on in your house in real-time.
Remove Your Spare Key
Select a spare key and be sure to come up with a clever way of hiding it in a safe place. Don’t hide your keys in easy-to-find places such as under a mattress, under the bed, or under or in your bedside table.
To avoid putting such household items where burglars can easily find them, remove your spare keys and leave them with a friend for safekeeping.
Check Your Insurance Policy
Before you travel, check your insurance policies. Despite your best efforts, the worst may still happen and when it does, it’s important to know that your home and its contents are insured.
There are many house insurance policies with different features and benefits, so take your time to consider your options. You can easily compare your options on sites like state nz house insurance
For instance, for many policies, there is a limit on how many days you can leave the home unoccupied and still make a claim.
Use a Doorbell Monitoring System
Video doorbell systems allow you to see, hear, and talk to visitors from anywhere in the world from your smartphone.
If an alarm goes off at your door, you can send an alert to your phone to ensure constant monitoring of the device.
Stay Away from Social Media
It’s well known that you shouldn’t post your vacation on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other social network or expose your contact details. It’s all too easy to do a quick Google search and link your phone numbers to your address.
You should delete any Facebook events that may also include your phones numbers.
Have Someone Live in the House
The most effective way to make sure your house is safe and secure while you travel is to get someone trustworthy – perhaps a neighbor or friend or relative – come to temporarily live in your home.
Alternatively, you can get someone to just come and water your plants, pick up your mail, and dispose of the trash. This may be a priority option, so be sure to apply this decision on that basis.
Concentrate on Enjoying your Vacation
Finally, make the most of your trip and enjoy yourself. You’ll be more relaxed knowing that your home is safe and you won’t have to deal with issues when you return.
Whether you are an experienced homeowner or an aspiring homeowner, it is essential that you take the necessary precautions to keep your home safe every time you travel, whether in winter or summer.
