Hello World! Welcome Friends! For those of us out there with a green thumb, trying to pick the right tools of the trade can be a challenge. That is especially true if you are looking to get into using a greenhouse, whether it be for your own use or commercial purposes. At the end of the day, there is a slight difference in the equipment needed on either side.
It is an innovative idea to research about this either way and figure out what could work for you. Largely, it will depend on what you are growing. So, be sure to stick around if you are curious about some of the different tools you can use and understand their uses.
What is a Greenhouse?
It is best to start here, just to avoid any potential confusion. A greenhouse is a structure or building in which you can grow crops that are not in season. You can see more here, https://www.britannica.com/topic/greenhouse, but there is not too much more to it. What is good to remember, though, is that there are a few several types.
One such are those for personal use. Any plants grown are used by the person who cultivated them, rather than sold. A commercial one has the crops sold, though, so that is the main distinction between them. They work in a comparable way as far as architecture and the materials used in construction.
Most often, plastics and glass are used to create the paneling that allows natural light to get inside. That is one of the things that heats the building, though other methods are used as well for tropical plants. Natural sunlight getting inside is critical either way.
What Equipment is Needed?
As far as greenhouse equipment goes, there are some simple staples that everyone should probably have, then more specialized items that you can consider on a case-by-case basis. As I mentioned previously, it will largely depend on what you are growing, so try to keep that in mind as you think about the items to purchase for your own greenhouse.
Some of the necessities involve heating and cooling. There are various systems that you can employ, such as stifling air heating or water heating. Both have their own positives and negatives, so it may be a good idea to consult with other professional farmers and gardeners to decide what will be best for you.
Fans known as extractors can also be quite critical in keeping up a steady supply of fresh air rather than letting it stagnate and get too hot inside the building. Many crop-variety plans prefer warm temperatures, but it should never be too extreme. They might have difficulty surviving without a way to bring in fresh air from the outside.
Fog systems can also be quite handy in that they provide you with a way to water the plants inside the greenhouse remotely or on a set schedule, saving you time and energy. They might not have one-hundred percent coverage or efficiency, though, so a fertigation line can be a solid choice as well. Essentially, they combine fertilizing with an irrigation system so both can be covered at once.
Growing benches are another almost essential since they provide a stationary space for growing in some cases but can be made portable in others. That is quite useful, as I am sure you can imagine. For those that want to take their plants to shows or something like that, it can be invaluable.
The last one that I will touch upon today is known as climate control consoles. They are not entirely needed depending on where you are located and what plants you have, but they can be useful, nonetheless. Mostly, their purpose is to automate the temperature and humidity within a greenhouse to optimize growth patterns.
Is it Hard to Find Equipment?
Thankfully, the answer to this is no. There are many retailers out there that offer services. Some even have options to consult with a professional to determine what you are missing in your own setup! You can learn more about what is required in a commercial one versus a personal one on this page.
Is it a Worthwhile Investment?
I cannot definitively answer this question, as it will depend on your own setup to some extent, but for the most part, it usually is. That is because there is a lot to be earned from something like selling what you grow if you go that route.
If you are taking them for yourself, though, it can save you a lot when you go grocery shopping, too! So, in both cases, it is a worthy thing to invest your time and energy into. That being said, just be conscious of costs versus profit, for example.
