Hello World! Welcome Friends! In today’s day and age people are becoming more and more aware of the negative effects of drinking unfiltered tap water. Tap water has been found to contain heavy metals and many other dissolved solids and hormones that are harmful to the human body. Additionally, buying bottled water is expensive and environmentally wasteful and often is just tap water anyway.
Some people use Brita filters which do not remove any significant amount of the aforementioned harmful compounds and also produce waste every time you throw out a filter. Some systems are limited to supplying just one tap in your house and some are capable of providing filtered water to all faucets in your house.
You will never have to worry about drinking tap water in your house again! Most importantly, you can rest easy knowing you are helping create less waste for a sustainable future.
In this article, we list the most useful and effective steps to install a whole home water filtration system all by yourself using tools you can find at your local hardware store. If you have never done any basic plumbing this might seem like a daunting task but it can be done with confidence and some instructional videos at important steps. If you don’t feel comfortable it is okay – not everyone is handy. The manufacturer or retail vendor where you purchased the system will be able to give you a list of certified installation specialists.
Sizing and Placing your System
Consider how many bathrooms you have. Some systems can handle 1-3 bathrooms, some can handle 4-6. Filtersmart offers whole home water systems for all home sizes and budgets. Another Important consideration to make is, do I have somewhere in my basement or crawl space where I can place a filter effectively? The next part is really important: you must make sure that the location for your filer has the “in” port closer to the water meter; the “out” should point toward the water heater. Additionally, you must keep in mind you are going to need to change the filters regularly so make sure to put it in an accessible area.
Last but not least it is very important that you make sure the pipe you are using isn’t being used as a ground for lighting strikes. This is uncommon in newer houses but some older houses used this method of grounding. If this is the case you can use a jumper wire which can be purchased at any major hardware store. Install the jumper wire so it connects the two pipes without touching the filters assembly. If you pass all those steps let get started on installing it!
Drain your Existing Water System
First turn off your water supply at the main supply shut off valve. Your next step is to locate the lowest point in your home with a faucet. This will likely be in your basement. Open the tap on the faucet and let the water drain leave it open for now.
Cut the Pipe
This may sound daunting but don’t worry if you have never cut a pipe before it’s really easy! When you have fully determined the location, you are placing the filter system and double checked everything will fit. The next step is to use the template provided with the kit to mark the pipe for exact placement. Use a pipe cutter to make two cuts, and remove the marked section of pipe. Use the twist handle to tighten the cutter onto the pipe so the blade lines up with your mark, then rotate the cutter around the pipe as you continue twisting the handle. Keep rotating the cutter around the pipe until it cuts all the way through. This may take a minute or so. (Have a bucket handy to catch any excess water when the pipe is cut — especially if you’re standing directly underneath.) Once you’ve cut out the section, use the reamer blade on the cutter to remove any burrs from inside the freshly cut pipe. Pipe cutters of various sizes can be found at any hardware store.
Attach the Fittings
Your next step is to follow the manufacturers recommended installation instructions that come with your particular system. Most systems will come with standard hardware and some may require you to purchase it from a hardware store. It is important that you get the “in” and “out” ports positioned correctly or your system will not filter properly. Make sure to use Teflon tape on all of the areas where there is a threaded connection to create a perfect seal. You will never lose a drop of beautiful filtered water.
Position the Filter
Position the water filter on the water line making sure that the in and out are correctly placed as outlined in step 1. To clarify once morethe “in” port should be on the end closer to the water meter; the “out” should point toward the water heater.
Next you can go ahead and tighten the two compression nuts by applying equal torque to both wrenches.
Turn on the Water
The filter kit comes with a specially designed handle which allows you to loosen and tighten the filter assemblage. Depending on the design and manufacture some might come with an additional tool to turn the inlet valve open and closed. Slowly turn the water back on at the main shut off valve and check for leaks on the filter assembly. Now you need to open the valve so the filer can receive water. Check for leaks again. If none appear you are good to go! Enjoy the purest water money can buy.
Maintenance
Your filter will need to be replaced after the time outlined by the manufacturer. Use the tool provided to remove the filter when needed make sure to shut off the water first. If you would like to make sure your water is always pure you can purchase a water purity tester that tests total dissolved solids and compare it to when your filter is new.
