Hello World! Welcome Friends! Even though magazines are on their way out, everyone unanimously agrees on what “magazine-worthy” means. It essentially means flawless, perfect, swoon-worthy, and so on. This is definitely true about homes too. You can think about home magazines such as Martha Stewart, Homes & Gardens, Living, Ect, and so on. The homes they display in these are absolutely gorgeous and pretty dreamy. It’s something that’s nearly similar to a gorgeous set in a movie or a Pinterest-perfect space.
The proportions are right, everything is spotless, and you can instantly tell that a space evokes a story. Now, with that said, there is one thing that should be addressed, how can you make your space appear magazine-worthy? Better yet, what about those who have an outdoor living space, such as a deck? How can they make those look magazine worthy? Well, keep reading on to learn more about how you can make this too!
Consider a Paint Job (or a Refresh)
One of the most cost-effective ways to make your deck look brand new is by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Aside from being visually appealing, paint provides a protective layer against harmful UV rays. Of course, this is going to depend on the wood, such as Garapa decking timber or something else. Also, it’s going to be the age of the wood/ deck that’s also going to count. But if your deck is old, then it’s going to help to paint it or add a little something to it. Before applying a stain or paint, you’ll need to clean your deck first. This can be done with a power washer or by scrubbing the wood. After the deck is cleaned, use a wood brightener. This will remove any stains and create an even color for your deck.
Planters are Everything
Planters are an easy way to add lush greenery to a deck. Evergreens can fit in beautifully with a modern structural design while flowering plants can provide colorful summertime blooms. While they offer the convenience of a full garden on your deck, planters can also damage the wood from inclement weather and constant moisture. So this is something you’ll need to be careful with.
One solution is to place saucers under pots, but these do not work as well as plant feet or risers, which elevate the base of the pot and improve drainage and airflow. In general, when it comes to potted plants and just planters, no matter the style, there are things to consider. You might want to consider the surroundings too, such as off the deck (but this, of course, depends on how far off the ground your deck is).
You Can’t Forget the Lighting
Lighting is crucial for not only making your deck look gorgeous but, generally speaking, it’s what makes the atmosphere of your deck. Plus, it’s how useful your deck will be, too- something all new homeowners should keep in mind. Lighting is key to creating a cozy, inviting space. String lights are a simple way to brighten your deck and add instant sparkle, while lanterns can create a more intimate ambiance. For larger spaces, consider installing pendant lights.
They’re easy to hang and come in various styles, with many remote-powered options for ease of use. Illuminating staircases with lighting is a safe and practical way to make it easier for you and your guests to move around the deck. You can also highlight rail designs with recessed lighting. Mounted cage wall lights are stylish and blend in with the surrounding environment. Table torch lights are another fun, tropical option that doubles as décor and a light source.
It’s All About the Furniture
Not just any furniture will do, it needs to be gorgeous and outdoor-friendly, and the proportions are going to play a major role too. Furnishing your deck with comfortable and durable furniture will make it the perfect spot for relaxing during the day or night. Add a collection of bright and cushy pillows to the sofa or chairs to reiterate your decorating scheme. You just have to make sure that you’re getting patio furniture, and if you can, try to stay far away from plastic, as this is going to instantly cheapen the appearance of your lovely deck.
Accessories Help Make the Theme
Just as a room deserves a theme, so do outdoor rooms too. Your deck is an extension of your home, so make it your own with a mix of seating options for versatility, serene greenery, colorful fabrics, and conversation-starting accessories. Choose from modern aluminum, traditional wrought iron, and charming wicker furnishings that look just as great outdoors as they do inside. For the most part, you can decorate your outdoors just like you would indoors. You can add decoration pieces, coffee tables, rugs, plants, cut flowers, knick-knacks, and so on to your space.
Statement Pieces Work
Who doesn’t love a good statement piece? It helps separate the bland space from a gorgeous space! Add a focal point to your deck that will grab the attention of guests and set the tone for entertaining. Whether it’s a fire pit, patio furniture set, or large outdoor rug, focusing on one or two larger items will help a small deck feel bigger and less cluttered. It’s really up to you what you want the statement piece to be, but you’re going to want it to be the center of attention. For a lot of decks, it’s usually a pool, jacuzzi, or the seating area itself that’s meant to be the statement piece.
Add Some Texture
You’re going to want to think about balancing out the hardness of the wood. This is actually pretty easy to achieve as you’ll need some furniture in the first place for your deck. Just be sure to incorporate soft features like blankets, cushions, and throw pillows. All of these really add that much-need texture! Besides, these are pretty essential anyways if you’re wanting to ensure that you have a comfortable (and flattering) outdoor living space to begin with.
