Hello World! Welcome Friends! Many students have difficulty with math. They find it boring or hard to understand. The problem is, math builds on itself. If your child misses one concept, he will probably struggle to understand the next thing his class learns as well. There are activities you can do at home though to make math more entertaining and easy to understand for your kid. Try one of these ideas to get some hands-on math practice at home.
Bake Together
Baking is a fantastic way to get in some practice with fractions. If the recipe calls for a half of a cup, give your child a 1/4 measuring cup and have them figure out what to do to get to a half. You can do this with all of the measurements so that your student gets as much practice as possible. Just make sure you are constantly monitoring so that the recipe actually gets followed. You can even throw in some division problems along the way to figure out how many baked treats each family member will get. This is also a great way to bond with your child, and you will have a delicious treat at the end.
Use Manipulatives
Hands-on learners love manipulatives. It makes the concept easier for them to understand because they can actually see the problem in front of them. This can be anything from blocks to different types of counters to a multiplication table. You can even use candy to help teach math concepts. This way they can see that if you have five pieces and take away two you will be left with three. These are great for subtraction and addition, but manipulatives can be used for just about any concept.
Practice Online
These days there are plenty of apps and websites you can use for outside help. You can either have your child go online, or you can print out different worksheets for them to do. Before downloading an app for your child, make sure it is safe. Many apps claim to be academic, but they don’t actually have any learning benefits, so read reviews before buying. Most sites have concepts broken down into categories by grade level to make it easier on you. Check with your child’s teacher to ensure that you are going along with the school’s curriculum.
Not only will these help your student with his math skills, but it is also a great way to get some bonding time in. You can do these throughout the school year as your child is introduced to new skills, or you can use them to get extra practice during the summer. Because these activities are so hands-on, they are great for kinesthetic learners. You can give your kid a quiz to find out what type of learner he is and tailor the activities to best suit his needs. Just make to check with the teacher so that you are building off what he is learning in the classroom and not teaching something a completely different way.
