Hello World! Welcome Friends! Not all of us have the ability or funds to extend our homes or move to a bigger house. This leaves us needing to use our existing space as best we can. And that means looking for new and improved ways to store our belongings, free up floor space and make rooms work harder and smarter for us. But how exactly can we do that without spending a fortune? Here are some practical suggestions and clever ideas you can try.
Utilize the Loft Space
Many of us have a loft space that could be put to better use. Although your loft space or budget may be too small for a full conversion, it can always be used for storage. The first thing you’ll need to do is make it accessible. There’s no need for complex work such as building a staircase, as fitting a loft hatch with a pull-down ladder is often the best solution. And DIY kits cost as little as £100.
You’ll need to make the loft floor suitable for walking on, and you’ll also need to add some storage, such as shelving units. Again, this shouldn’t be too complex or expensive. And if you need help, a reputable handyman should be able to board the loft and help you build storage. You may need a light fitting too, but if you want to avoid bringing in an electrician, a battery-powered LED loft light will work well.
Lightweight but sturdy metal shelves are a good option for lofts. Storing items in lidded, plastic boxes will keep them protected from moisture and rodents. This means you can store away things you don’t often use, such as Christmas decorations, portable fans and camping equipment. This is an ideal solution for homes without garages or utility rooms to keep them free from clutter.
Turn Dead Space into Practical Space
The loft isn’t the only space in the home that’s possible to use better. If you have a set of stairs, then no doubt there’s dead space underneath it. Some people use it as a cupboard, but it can often be put to better use as a cloakroom or home office.
If you only have one family bathroom, adding a toilet not only makes practical sense but can increase your home’s value. Although space under the stairs is tight, you can often fit a toilet and small basin in without too much trouble. For really small spaces, a toilet that comes with an integral hand basin on top of the cistern is an ideal solution. These combination units tend to use less space for plumbing and installation.
Alternatively, you may find turning the space under the stairs into a study, or home office is much more useful. This could free up space in the living or dining room, and having a dedicated office space helps to separate home and work life. A wall-mounted desk works well in this kind of space and maximizes your legroom. And built-in shelving above the desk should provide plenty of storage space. Add a curtain or door, and you’ll be able to close the space off in the evening.
Improving Storage In a Small Kitchen
Many people extend their homes because the kitchen simply isn’t big enough. But when that isn’t possible, you may need to improve the existing storage to make better use of the space you have.
Thankfully there are lots of affordable tricks to do this. Adding hooks underneath your wall cupboards provides space to hang cups, pans and utensils and frees up valuable cupboard and drawer space. Slim-line shelving units on casters are handy for making use of small spaces between base units. Baskets placed on top of wall cabinets are ideal for storing lightweight items that you don’t often use. And over-the-door spice racks are a way to add storage when there’s no spare wall space.
If you have a bit more space, then a pantry or larder cupboard is a good addition, as these are built with shelving, drawers and rack space. So, you can store lots of items and stay organized. And to make a kitchen dining space work better, think about using a fold-down table or bench seating with built-in storage.
