Hello World! Welcome Friends! It’s a scorching summer day, and your AC has decided to take a vacation. What can you even do? Although yes, you’re going to have to schedule an appointment for AC repair, what else can you do in the meantime? Well, you’re going to try to keep cool.
But in the summer, it’s hot, unless you have a nice pool you can sit in all day, how can you actually keep cool? Well, don’t sweat it (literally)! Here are some practical and creative ways to stay cool until your HVAC gets repaired or you finally decide to splurge on that new AC unit.
Embrace the Power of Fans
Alright, this is basic, but really, who cares? It’s true, and it works! Fans are your best friends right now. You’re going to want to set up multiple fans around your home to create a cross-breeze. Actually, you should place one fan facing out of a window to push hot air out and another facing in to pull cooler air in. If you have ceiling fans, make sure they’re rotating counterclockwise to push air down and create a wind-chill effect.
Close the Blinds
It’s super important to keep in mind that sunlight streaming through your windows can turn your home into an oven. Instead, keep your blinds or curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the heat. Blackout curtains are even better, as they can reduce heat by up to 25%. If you don’t have blackout curtains, hanging a blanket or sheet over the window can do the trick.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Generic advice? Sure, but is it true? Absolutely! So, with that said, it’s essential to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help regulate your body temperature. For a refreshing twist, add some slices of cucumber, lemon, or mint to your water. Ice-cold beverages can be tempting, but they can actually cause your body to produce more heat. Stick with cool or room-temperature drinks for the best results.
Get Creative with Cold Compresses
During these few days until your AC is repaired, you’re going to feel really bad physically speaking. Sometimes, a fan just isn’t enough. So, you could look into cold compresses. Honestly, these are lifesavers when you’re feeling overheated.
No money is required either! All you do is just grab a few washcloths, soak them in cold water, and place them on your wrists, neck, or forehead. You can also fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the fridge for a quick, refreshing mist. If you’re feeling crafty, make your own ice pack by filling a sock with rice and freezing it.
Take Cool Showers
Now, this one is not utilized enough! A quick way to cool down is to hop into a cool (not cold) shower. The water will help lower your body temperature. It can help for at least an hour.
Cook Outside
Needless to say, using your stove or oven can add a lot of unwanted heat to your home. Do you have a BBQ? Well, if you do, then you might want to just cook with that, but of course, you could microwave food or even just eat no-cook meals like salads for dinner.
