Hello World! Welcome Friends! Gutter guards can be a great way to protect your gutters from debris and blockages, providing an extra level of shielding to make sure that large pieces of dirt or other big items can’t wedge themselves in the gutter drains. This makes them a great addition to almost any home and something that many homeowners consider installing at one point or another.
However, like all additions to your home, it can be tough to decide whether it is a project you can do DIY or not. If you are interested in gutter guards and you have some home improvement experience, it might be tempting to install them yourself – so you need to be prepared.
Choose a Gutter Guard Type
The gutter guard installation process will vary based on the kind of gutter guards that you choose. While there are not necessarily any distinct styles, there are still going to be different varieties based on the exact kind of guard that you get. Knowing what you are buying can be important for dealing with the installation properly.
First are the guard sheets – the layers that cover your entire gutter. These are best for dealing with situations where you get a lot of debris in your gutters, such as leaves from nearby trees. These can take quite a while to install, but they also provide the most widespread protection for your gutters.
The others are the “bulb” style gutter guards, placed at the top of the downpipe. While these do not stop debris from going into the flat gutter pipes, they do prevent that debris from going down into the drainage system and are much easier to install due to being a single small piece.
Prepare the Roof
Make sure that you have access to the roof section that you want to add the guards to. Install any support brackets that might be needed in the gutters, then start putting together or unwinding the gutter material.
Be sure to clean out and test your gutter first, too. If there are any existing blockages, you want to get them cleared before adding the guards.
Push In the Guards
Push in and secure each guard piece beneath your roofing material. You want to make sure that the guards are fully secured. Otherwise, a storm could rip them away and make the rest of the guards far less effective.
This often is not as simple as just “pushing them in” and requires actual work to secure them in place. Be sure that you understand how the guards are meant to work before attempting anything.
Call a Specialist
While you can handle gutter guard installation on your own with the right tools and equipment, it can be a multi-hour process with a lot of pitfalls. For most people, it is best to just call a specialist to install the guards – ideally after getting somebody to check your gutters for you.
Do not be afraid to let a professional do the work instead of DIYing it. Like many other home improvement projects, there are some tasks that are simply best left to experienced contractors, especially things that are meant as a protective measure.
