Hello World! Welcome Friends! There will be some of you reading that headline and instantly entering into a fit of despair. Sports in the house? Anyone who has children will know that there are enough things that can be broken and go wrong without bringing sports into the mix. But we thought we would take a look at how sports can be integrated into home life without causing too big a commotion.
Most households have at least one sports-loving member – and many are full of fans of all kinds of sports. It may not be that you need to entertain the idea of your Dallas Cowboys-supporting brood setting up scrimmages in the kitchen. It could be just checking the markets for online betting in Texas. But there is still a way that sports can play a role in a domestic setting.
We are not suggesting that you give in and allow sports to take over the house. But, just like any family interest, there is a place for sports to flourish in any home and we are keen to help you find a way to welcome it into yours.
Indoor Games
If you were to take your interior design tips from TV shows such as MTV Cribs and other glimpses into the lifestyles of the rich and famous, you might think about building an indoor basketball court or other such fancy sports arenas. But the fact is that precious few of us have the space or money for such grandeur.
That doesn’t mean that we can’t adapt what we do have though. Basketball hoops should probably be situated outside but mini hoops can be placed indoors – as long as softer balls are used. There is also the potential for bringing some of the UK’s favorite sports into American homes. Snooker, pool, and billiard tables can fit in even some relatively small rooms, and standard or custom pool cues can enhance the experience – while a darts board takes up no space at all.
Outdoor Facilities
This is what you probably thought of when we first mentioned sports at home. If you have any kind of garden space – and sports fans in the house – you will have already seen how it can be used for football scrimmages, baseball catching, and even roller hockey shooting. But there is a lot more you can do.
The main thing to remember is to dedicate a space to sports. This means that everyone understands that other places are out of bounds for that kind of activity. If your garden is big enough, make sure that there is enough room for more restful activities, as well as your football field.
Using Space Wisely
One guaranteed way to end up with breakages and chaos is to try to cram in as much sports and sports-related activity in your house as possible. Depending on where you live and the facilities nearby, it is understandable if there is a reluctance to venture further afield.
But by using the space – indoors and outdoors – wisely, you can provide a place for sports to be played and enjoyed. We have all seen basketball hoops in front of garages but other sports can be catered for in the same way. Overestimate space needs rather than underestimate – but you might be surprised what can be done in a relatively small space.
Watching Sports
If you have members of the family that want to play sports in and around the house, it is highly likely that there will be a desire to watch sports as well. This can be a problem for anyone who isn’t quite as enamored with losing the chance to watch the television all weekend. So compromises need to be found.
The most obvious way to placate all members of the family is to have separate rooms and TV sets for sports and non-sports. The idea of a sports den to watch the Super Bowl is going to be welcomed wholeheartedly by all fans anyway, so this is one compromise that both sides of the argument will be more than happy about.
Working as a Team
What you have probably realized from all of the ideas we have put forward in this guide to making your home sports-friendly is that you need to have everyone pulling together. There is simply no point in being anti-sports if you live with people who are avid sports fans.
Creating spaces and areas of your house and garden to be used for sports can be done without losing other elements of your home life that are important to you. As long as you are careful about how you utilize the space you have, there should be enough room for everyone’s interest to be indulged.
Sports and Homes Can Mix
If you are lucky enough to live in a home that has enough space for sports to thrive, it can be something that is extremely beneficial for all members of the family. Ensuring personal property and mementos are not in danger of being destroyed is obviously of paramount importance – but there is no reason why sports and your home cannot co-exist.
Any family will know that things will get broken from time to time. Accidents happen. But if you plan more carefully about the design of your house and how you utilize your space, you can minimize them as much as any house that doesn’t embrace sports as a collective family activity. It might not be a good idea to start a game of two-on-two in your living room – but there is definitely a place and a time for sports in every home.
