Hello World! Welcome Friends! We all know the feeling. One minute you’re excited about the big get-together that is about to happen in your household – perhaps you’re about to host your first Christmas bash or get the family together for a milestone birthday – the next, you’re looking at your home and thinking: how on earth is this place going to cope?!
Unless you live in the Taj Mahal or Beverly Hills Hotel, it is unlikely that you will have absolutely no pre-party jitters, especially when it comes to the number of people you are going to be hosting – not to mention the fact you still want your home to feel spacey, comfortable and impressive.
There are ways, however, in which you can prepare for such an event. It starts with basic planning:
Look Seriously at the Seating Arrangements
First things first, look at your furniture and ask yourself: is this really enough? That is to say, will there be room for your great uncle Robert if the entire family is sitting down in one spot? If there is not, then how can you make the room?
Look into creating communal hot spots in places like the kitchen, where people are naturally more inclined to stand. If you would prefer seating options, is it possible you can make that hot spot in the garden? Foldable garden furniture is far cheaper than buying an extra sofa, so look into ways you can direct guests to that area of your home and save yourself a few pennies!
Think About the Things No-One Thinks About
Yes, yes, that sounds a bit insane, but it’s a legitimate pointer. There are so many hosts and hostesses who forget about certain things that feel huge when the party begins. For instance, if you’re hosting a get-together like a bar mitzvah – which will involve lots of presents and a helluva lot of family – then where are you planning on putting all the Bar Mitzvah Gifts? You need to designate a corner of the room, but you don’t want it to look messy or cluttered, so you will need a table to display them.
Similarly, what about your lighting? As mentioned earlier, if you are planning on hosting a meal on the patio, is the lighting sufficient enough during the late hours? Don’t resort to saying, “it’ll do”. What if your poor great uncle Robert is hard-of-sight? You need to cater to everyone and ensure that options are in places, such as candles or battery-powered lights. These are just two examples, so make sure to sit yourself down and have a good old think about what you might be missing.
Tidy, Tidy, Tidy
Last but not least, make sure to tidy the place – and we mean really tidy the place. Don’t make do with decluttering and sweeping up a few cobwebs. Get down on your hands and knees and scrub like you’re preparing to welcome the King of England. Your home is essentially going to be the stage of the party, so you have to ensure it looks beautiful and is fit for Broadway.
You will also realize that the cleaning process can give you ideas when it comes to opening up the entire household. If you’re moving the living room coffee table to clean the carpet, for instance, you might find that such a small task really opened up the space, so you decide to keep it that way. Go through the house top to bottom and make sure that it sparkles for the first guest and keeps that way right up until the last one leaves – the chances are, you will find spaces you never even knew existed!
