Hello World! Welcome Friends! Two common problems that most households face with their water heaters include no hot water or lack of adequate supply of hot water. Since both these situations can be inconvenient, you can try fixing them at your end first, and if nothing works out, you may have to call a professional plumber for assistance.
DIY tips for no hot water supply
Before you begin to inspect your heating system, check all the faucets and fixtures to see if they run hot water. In case you don’t find it anywhere, then you can follow these steps.
- Set the heater on pilot mode before you take a peep inside it. Dismantle the bottom metal cover of the water heater to check if the burner or pilot light is on. If there is a flame near the pilot gas supply tube, it is okay. Otherwise, you would need to reignite it. You can find instructions for it on the tank. Sometimes, a defective thermocouple can also lead to this problem. For repair, you would want to call an expert plumber.
- Ignite the burner if it is not turned on by replacing its cover and setting the thermostat to nearly 120 degrees. If this doesn’t help, modify the temperature to higher levels and wait for the burner to light up. When the burner begins to light up, remove the cover to bring thermostat to its appropriate setting. In case the problem persists, get in touch with a repairing service as there can be some issue with the thermostat.
DIY tips for insufficient hot water supply
When your heating system fails to produce enough hot water, you can follow these steps to solve your concern.
- Set the thermostat to a higher temperature for the flame to burn. If it lights up, leave the temperature setting like that and wait for an hour to check the hotness of the water. You can use a meat thermometer for temperature reading.
- In case the burner doesn’t light up and water is also cold, you will have to investigate heater’s pilot light once again. You can find instructions for reigniting it on your gas heater’s manual guide. Generally, you have to turn the gas control knob of the heating device to pilot mode after switching it off.
- Continuous problem with the pilot light can be an indication that there is some issue with its orifice. A clogged orifice will not let the flame to last. You can clean it off the dirt and rubbish. By chance this doesn’t work, you can look for the thermocouple. A dirty thermocouple can also be a hindrance here. Use sandpaper to get rid of the debris from there. As soon as it is clean, you can light up the gas and the pilot to see how your heater functions now.
