Working from home is awesome… until your “office” starts feeling like a dentist waiting room.
You deserve a space that doesn’t suck the life out of you every time you sit down to work. Something that looks good, feels good, and maybe even makes you want to be productive.
So here’s how to decorate your workspace without going full Pinterest-overkill or spending a fortune at IKEA.
These are the tips I wish someone gave me when my “home office” was just a laptop on the kitchen bench.
1. Start with the Vibe
Before you touch anything, ask yourself: What kind of space do I actually want to be in every day?
Do you want it calm and minimalist? Bright and creative? Cozy and soft like a reading nook?
This isn’t about aesthetics—this is about mood. Your space should feel like you. Not like a cubicle in disguise.
Not sure where to start? Open Pinterest or TikTok and just scroll until something makes you go “ooh.” That’s your vibe.
2. Pick One Focal Point
This is your showstopper. The thing that catches your eye the second you sit down.
Could be:
- A bold print on the wall
- A sculptural lamp
- A moodboard or corkboard with pics of stuff you love
- Your monitor setup (make it clean, symmetrical, satisfying)
Don’t try to “decorate” everything. Just pick one thing and build around it.
Trust me—one great focal point looks way better than ten average ones.
3. Light It Like You Mean It
Overhead lights? Harsh. Fluorescent lights? Depressing. You need better lighting, full stop.
Grab a lamp. String up some soft LEDs. Light a candle. Open your damn curtains.
Good lighting = good mood = better work.
And if you’re on Zoom calls, lighting also = you not looking like a blurry potato.
Warm light makes your space feel cozy. White light makes it feel like a lab. Choose wisely.
4. Add Personality (but Don’t Clutter)
You don’t need to fill every shelf. In fact, please don’t.
Pick 2–3 personal items that make you smile or tell your story:
- A photo of something that reminds you why you’re working so hard
- A souvenir from a trip
- A weird little object you love but can’t explain (I have a tiny llama statue, don’t ask)
Keep it light. Too much stuff, and it becomes visual noise. You want character, not chaos.
5. Put a Plant on It
This tip is simple: add a plant.
Even a fake one. Even a sad one. Doesn’t matter.
Plants make any room feel more alive. They break up all the hard lines and tech. They add color, texture, and life.
No green thumb? Try:
- Snake plant
- ZZ plant
- Pothos
All basically indestructible. And they look great.
6. Make It Functional and Pretty
Let’s be real—your space has to work. But that doesn’t mean it has to be ugly.
- Use a nice tray to catch random stuff (keys, cords, pens)
- Get a mousepad that actually looks good (leather, cork, something cool)
- Hide cords if you can. Use a box, a hook, a binder clip—whatever works.
Everything in your space should either:
- Serve a purpose
- Make you smile
If it does neither, it’s just in the way.
7. Change It Up Now and Then
This one’s underrated.
You don’t have to do a full makeover. Just… move something.
- Swap out a photo
- Change your desktop wallpaper
- Put your lamp on the other side
- Add a new scent (candle, diffuser, whatever makes you feel rich)
Changing one small thing can make the whole space feel new again. And that fresh-start energy is gold when you’re working from home.
Wrap-Up: Keep It Yours
Here’s the truth: Your workspace doesn’t have to look like some tech CEO’s desk or a magazine spread.
It just needs to feel like your spot.
A space that makes you want to sit down and do your thing—whether that’s spreadsheets, art, gaming, or building your side hustle.
Don’t overthink it. You don’t need fancy stuff. You just need a few small choices that make your space feel less “blah” and more you.
And if you want a shortcut to making your space feel finished, start with one coordinated setup. Like the full leather range at Sycamotre Custom. Pick one item now, add to it later. It builds over time.
Over to You
Got a home office setup you love?
Have a weird item on your desk that nobody else understands?
Want a quick roast (or hype-up) of your current workspace?
Drop it in the comments, or tag me if you post a pic.
And hey—if this post gave you even one good idea, send it to a mate who’s still working from a folding chair in the laundry.
They need this.
