Hello World! Welcome Friends! If you want your windows to look more stylish and solid, try using shutters. This is a common item in the design and decoration of houses. You know what? In addition to beautifying your home, exterior window shutters also protect it from the extreme weather and thieves. When choosing suitable shutters, you will be confused with plenty of models in the market. Don’t worry, we’re here with you. We will give you some useful tips to choose the best exterior shutters for your windows. Let’s follow the instructions below.
How to choose the best material for exterior window shutters
The material you choose depends on your living area, your budget, and the purpose of use such as weather protection, anti-theft, or decoration. Then, you can select the corresponding materials like aluminum, wood or composite wood, and vinyl.
Aluminum
The shutters made of electrostatic aluminum are the best choices. . Rest assured that the shutters will not be cracked, rotten, or warped under the sun. Plus, they are capable of protecting your house against storms and other bad weather.
Additionally, the aluminum exterior shutters are easy to operate. Finally, they are built to last for 20 to 30 years with less maintenance required.
Wood
Next is the wooden exterior shutters, which are ideal for a dry climate. But it costs more and requires regular constant maintenance. You also have to color and seal them regularly.
One tip here is to choose eco-sustainable woods like cedar, redwood, cypress or mahogany. Cedar can help to insulate the house and protect it from low temperatures. It is also less prone to warp and twist than other woods.
For those with a small budget, there are composite wood shutters, although they will not last as long as aluminum or wood ones. The main reason is that this material is made up of technical wood wrapped in a vinyl or PVC coating.
Vinyl
Finally, we will talk about Vinyl exterior shutters, the lowest-priced material in this list. However, note that the vinyl shutters are often prone to cracking or warping. And the larger installation you make, the more sagging the shutters will be over time.
It is also quick to stain or yellow and you will find it harder to clean and repair. As a result, we don’t highly recommend this for home use.
How to buy the best exterior window shutters
Size and type
First, you need to measure your windows to find the size of shutters and consider the type of shutters that suits your home design.
For example, if your home is built in the style of a Colonial or Greek Renaissance, shutters with raised panels add a charming touch. These shutters are available with one, two, or three raised panels.
With a Cape Cod or Mediterranean house, shutters with board-and-batten offer elegance thanks to horizontal battens and vertical panels. You can choose four boards and two battens or three boards and three battens.
Color
Then, choose the color to create the effect you want. The bright colors like light blue or alabaster make your house look wider. Besides, your windows will seem bigger if your shutters and window borders are in the same color.
Dark color lovers can choose dark blue, dark green, or dark brown. One trick for you is to look at the color pattern in the sunlight to select the accurate color.
To sum up
After receiving the shutters, the final step is installation. You can fasten them directly into the door with screws or use hinges to attach them.
When you install the exterior window shutters outside your home, it can bring a nicer look. It also increases the durability of your home door, supports anti-theft, and highlights your home design. Let’s choose the best shutters and install them immediately.

great article Kathryn. We are seeing Aluminum used more and more here in Louisiana on homes. Up until a few years ago, they were strictly on commercial. However, some paints can make them almost look wood like. But they are a bit more pricey. Loved the article , some great info here for people trying to figure out which shutters to go with. Thanks
