Hello World! Welcome Friends! When a friend is sick with an extended illness it can be a dark time for them. It is hard not to be able to do the things you love and maintain a normal life style. As a friend, you may have some concern as to how you can help keep their spirits up and keep them encouraged as they recuperate.
Stay positive
The first thing you need to do is to acknowledge and validate their feelings about being sick. Don’t tell them everything will be okay or not to worry, because that may not be true, but try to be positive and encouraging. Go prepared with a joke or some entertaining news to get their mind off their troubles. Try to smile and be cheerful when you are around them.
Take Food
When someone is sick, they may not be eating enough, especially if they are living on their own. Take in a burger or sweet snack on occasion. You could make it feel more special by sending them one of those custom meal gift baskets. These baskets can include anything your friend enjoys from pizza to chili to health foods and they look special when they arrive. Food is a universal gift that almost anyone can enjoy.
Read to Them
Reading can provide a getaway, but when someone is ill, it can be hard to focus or even bring on a headache as they do the reading themselves. Find a positive book that you can both enjoy, and that has a bit of humor and a happy outcome, and share the adventure together. You might even choose a book that has been made into a movie you can watch together afterward.
Take Them for a Ride
If your friend is able to tolerate going out in the car, take them for a relaxing drive and give them a change of scenery. A change can be a big lift for morale. Drive up to the mountains or along a lakefront. Visit a national park if they are up for a full day. Make sure to take along any medications or equipment such as oxygen that they may need to keep them comfortable.
The thing to remember is that any effort you make is a good thing. It does not need to be magnanimous; it only needs to be sincere. Caring for a sick friend can help get through a tough time and also strengthen your friendship.
