Hello World! Welcome Friends! Lighting is a very important element of interior design. The right lighting improves functionality, evokes positive emotion, and adds to the aesthetic appeal. Take recessed lights for example. These light fixtures installed in the ceiling cast down direct light which looks absolutely stunning in kitchens, bathrooms, and home theaters. Be that as it may, they don’t provide too much illumination throughout an entire room.
The good news, however, is that recessed lights can be updated fairly easily. With a few basic tools, a recessed light conversion kit, and a few moments of your time, you can dramatically change the look and function of any room.
Tools You’ll Need
Before getting started, you’ll need to grab a few tools and supplies that do not come with a recessed light conversion kit. This includes a ladder, cordless drill, flathead and Phillips screwdriver, a no-contact voltage tester, and your preferred light fixture. There are several types of light fixtures to choose from including stylish hanging lamps, chandeliers, and ceiling fans.
Turn Off the Power
Unlike simply changing a lightbulb, you’ll be working closely with electrical wires. Therefore, you want to protect yourself by making sure that the electricity powering the recessed light is turned off. Go beyond just turning off the light switch and turn off the power source from the circuit breaker. Turn the light switch off and on to ensure the power is completely off before you begin working.
Remove Bulbs and Test Power
Remove the lightbulb from the ceiling. Then, use the screwdriver to remove any screws. Next, remove the metal housing from the ceiling so that the electrical wiring is exposed. Be sure to leave the socket in place. Using the no-contact voltage tester, test each exposed wire to ensure that there is no electricity going to the lines. If a voltage is detected, go back to the circuit breaker and turn off the correct switch and retest the wires.
Install the Recessed Light Conversion Kit
Now, it’s time to install the light conversion kit. While instructions will vary by manufacturer, here is some basic steps for reference:
First, you need to get the adjustable bar mounted and the socket adapter installed. Screw in the socket adapter. Then, using your cordless drill, mount the adjustable bar to the canned lighting housing.
Next, center the sliding mounting bar adapter by the center screw on the socket adapter and centering the bar. Then, retighten the screw.
Attach the two mounting screws from your conversion kit to the mounting bar. Then, attach the mounting bracket to the adjustable bar using two machine screws and your cordless drill.
To attach the grounding clamp, look for a clean area on the canister housing and attach the clamp with a flathead screwdriver and the appropriate screw.
Decide how long you want the wire on the pendant light to hang and either cut it or coil it up and leave it in the canister.
The lamp bracket is the final bracket in your conversion kit that needs to be installed. Use the nuts provided in the kit to attach the lamp bracket to the mounting bracket (in the ceiling).
Holding the decorative medallion to the ceiling, string all the light fixture lights through and connect them using the wire nuts from the kit. Be sure to connect same-colored wires together and secure with a wire nut.
Install the Light Fixture
Now that the recessed light conversion kit has been installed, you’re ready for the final step – installing the light fixture. Connect the pendant to the decorative medallion and, using the decorative nuts in the light conversion kit, secure them both to the ceiling. If there is a glass or decorative shade for the pendant light, you can install this now.
Restore Power
Once you’ve installed your new light fixture, all that’s left to do is head to the circuit breaker and restore the power. Turn on the light and admire your work! There you have it. It’s really that easy to change dull and inefficient recessed lights into something more modern, practical, and functional (that also improves your home’s value). With many different recessed light conversion kit styles to choose from, you could essentially transform any room in your house to make it suit your needs.
