Hello World! Welcome Friends! There’s nothing more relaxing than sinking into the sofa or armchair with a refreshing beverage. However, forgetting about your drink that’s sat on the coffee table once you’re cozy and settled is extremely frustrating. So, what better way to combat this issue than build your very own wooden sofa sleeve with a cup holder?
Step One
First thing’s first, you’ll need to establish what sized wood you need by measuring the arm of your chair or sofa. The height and the width will determine what size you’ll need to cut your wood pieces to. Once you’ve decided what size you need the pieces of wood to be, you can mark the measurements using a pencil and cut the pieces to size using a wood saw blade.
Step Two
Once all your pieces have been cut to size, you’ll need to form the slot for your cup in the top piece. You should do this by marking the middle, where the drill will begin creating the slot. Upon everything being marked, use your drill or jigsaw to cut the slot from the top piece. When it comes to drilling, it’s a good idea to clamp the wood in place, otherwise, you risk losing control of the drill.
Step Three
You should now be left with two regular slats of wood and one slat of wood with a hole cut out. At this point, you will need to sand the inside of the slot, as well as the top and bottom of each piece of wood. However, you should avoid sanding the edges at this stage as rounding the corners and smoothing the edges can hinder the joining stages.
Step Four
Next, you’ll need to apply a layer of wood glue to one of the long edges of one of your side pieces. If the glue runs over the side of the edges, be sure to remove it with a damp cloth, as dried wood glue is extremely tricky to remove.
Step Five
Once you have spread the glue on your side piece, you’ll need to clamp it to the bottom of the top board. It’s important that the boards are perfectly lined up so make sure that this is the case before you clamp your materials together. After the first of the two sides has been clamped and dried, you’ll need to repeat this process on the other side.
Step Six
Upon both pieces being glued together and clamped into place for drying, you’ll need to sand the final product all over for a smooth finish. You should opt for 150 to 200 grit sandpaper to ensure that the wood is left completely smooth without any scratches.
Step Seven
Once your sofa sleeve is completely smooth, you can then brush on a coat of wood stain. It will need at least 12 hours to dry so don’t rush this process. After it’s dry, you can buff away any coarseness using some steel wool. If you find that this affects the finish, you might want to add another layer of wood stain.
Step Eight
After this, you should fix a square piece of thin plywood to the bottom side of the slot using wood glue. Once again, you should wipe away any excess glue as this will seep out during the clamping process, which will result in dried glue being visible on the product.
Step Nine
Once the stain and glue are dry, you should finish by sealing your product with a couple of layers of polyurethane. Without this, your sleeve might incur damage from cup condensation.
Your wooden sofa sleeve with a cup holder is now ready for use!
