Hello World! Welcome Friends! It didn’t take very long for the #MeToo movement to catch on a few years ago. It became a global phenomenon practically overnight, but the movement hasn’t exactly made things easier. Although it has been used to provide support for those who have been sexually assaulted or abused, social media has made it very easy to weaponize and deem people guilty before all of the facts have come to light.
The Viral Nature Of The #MeToo Movement
Although Alyssa Milano has gotten credit for making the movement go viral, it’s actually Tarana Burke who started the movement. Using the hashtag on a single tweet was how the movement became so viral, allowing any woman who had been sexually assaulted to let their voice be heard in the simplest way possible.
Within twenty-four hours, over 4.7 million people had used the #MeToo tag, and that number continued to explode every day after that. Almost every sex assault law firm was getting ready to have a case on their hands as a result.
The Movement Spread Across The World
Because of the global nature of social media, other countries were adopting the movement in their own languages, allowing victims to continue speaking their stories with just a simple hashtag. It wasn’t long before the Hollywood stars were sharing their stories too about their own experiences, demonstrating to the world that even the seemingly untouchable could still be victims of horrible crimes.
The Movement Has Lost Its Focus
However, people have started using the movement as a weapon instead of a tool, says Tarana Burke. The original purpose was to show how many people suffered from sexual assaults that no one is aware of; instead, it has been used to target individuals and take them down out of revenge instead of it being a healing process.
Everyone now throws around the term as someone being “MeToo’d” when they’re accused of assaulting another person. That has not improved the meaning and purpose of the term one bit.
The Final Result
As soon as someone has come out with a story about being assaulted by another person, it becomes a rallying cry of “Me Too” and considering the offender guilty before they’ve even gone to trial. One classic example is the demonization of Jonny Depp by Amber Heard’s rallying cry of “Me Too;” everyone took her side in the story because she was the woman and he was the man; who wasn’t going to believe her? In the end, the truth finally came out about what she’d done, but the damage had already been done to Depp’s reputation, especially in the show business community.
As with most things that go viral on the Internet, it’s important to keep a level head, especially when it comes to people being accused of serious crimes. If you are the victim of a sexual assault, or if you’ve been falsely accused of sexual assault, you should seek the counsel of an experienced attorney immediately to help you.
