Backyard pools bring joy, especially in warm weather, but the chemicals used to keep water clean can come with invisible side effects. These effects are most noticeable in the air rather than in the water and can directly impact lung function in both swimmers and those nearby.

Chlorine, often the primary disinfectant, reacts with organic materials like sweat, skin cells, and urine to form chloramines. These compounds become airborne and can irritate respiratory passages when inhaled. The sharp smell many associate with “clean” pool water is actually the presence of chloramines in the air. In poorly ventilated indoor pools, or even crowded outdoor ones, these airborne byproducts can accumulate and lead to coughing, wheezing, or chest tightness.
Repeated exposure to these irritants may be especially concerning for individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions. Children, who tend to spend more time in the water and inhale more air relative to their body size, are particularly vulnerable. Swimmers who experience discomfort after time in the pool may not realize the link between chemical exposure and their symptoms.
Proper pool maintenance is essential, but so is managing air quality. Keeping water balanced, showering before swimming, and ensuring good ventilation in enclosed areas all reduce harmful byproduct formation. Additionally, proper plumbing equipment such as pipe check valves can support cleaner water circulation, indirectly helping limit chemical buildup.
Pool chemicals play an essential role in sanitation, but without care, they can quietly affect the lungs. Awareness and maintenance are key to creating a safer, healthier swimming experience for everyone. Check out the infographic below to learn more.
