Hello World! Welcome Friends! One of the wonderful things about all of the technological advances of the past few decades is that they work to make a mother’s life easier. This is nothing new, but sometimes it feels almost magical. There’s the saying that we all thought we’d be in flying cars by now, but if you think about it we’re kind of close. Look at the self-driving technology that has been coming out lately! It’s probably just a matter of time before Tesla owners are able to lift off.
Let’s dive right in and take a look at some (more practical than flying cars) uses of technology that might make your own life easier:
A Tablet: Not Quite a Phone and Not Quite a Laptop
A tablet isn’t quite a phone and it isn’t quite a laptop computer, which is why many people consider it an unnecessary luxury. However, as a mom you’ll find that a tablet really comes in handy. The obvious advantage is when you want to slip off somewhere with headphones and catch up on your Netflix, or look up a YouTube video when you’re in the kitchen. But a tablet can be so much more. You can lend it to your little ones so that they can play a learning game or watch videos while you’re trying to focus on another project. To take this to the next level, look online and buy a vehicle tablet mount; then you’ll be able to drive around with your tablet right next to you. This comes in handy for looking up directions, managing your calendar, and more. And if you position the mount so it’s more for the passengers than for the driver, you can put a movie on and entertain the little ones (or big ones) on a long drive.
Voice-Activated Devices
A mother with her hands full and a boiling pot of water on the stove is going to consider it a blessing to be able to simply say aloud, “Hey Google, set a timer for 10 minutes” or “Hey Google, turn on the living room lights.” There are more options than “hey Google,” too. Each of the big companies (Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft for starters) seem to have their own. You can incorporate these devices with all sorts of useful applications, from managing your thermostat to playing music to finding out your local weather report.
Sleep Monitors
Is it me, or are baby sleep monitors getting more advanced? You can use these for more than just monitoring your baby’s nap while you’re in another room. You can also use them for your little ones as they progress to toddler and post-toddler years so that you can hear if they’re having a bad dream or are awake for some reason. Sure, once the children get to be a certain age you’re going to start feeling more like a spy than a mom, but until then, enjoy the tech!
Websites
Don’t underestimate your ability to write and publish interesting content. As a mother, you learn valuable information every day. This information could be useful to any number of people out there. The technology you would be working with would be a domain registrar, a hosting provider, and a blogging platform. Depending on your level of experience, you could simplify things and use something like Squarespace or Wix, or take it on as a learning project and do it all yourself. Once you have a website running, you can play with technologies like search engine optimization, visitor analytics, and social media promotion.
YouTube
What can you say about YouTube? How about: What can’t you say about YouTube? Sometimes it feels like you can learn how to do just about anything there: cooking, crafts, playing musical instruments, hobbies, yoga, and even child-rearing! It’s good for children, too. You can let them watch videos that teach them math and English skills, for starters.
