Hello World! Welcome Friends! Are you finding it difficult to keep your dog in the yard? It’s undeniable that dogs are a treasured part of any family. However, they can often be a nightmare to try and keep safe and inside the perimeter of your property!
In this article, we will explain how to train your dog to stay in the yard so that your furry companion is safe at all times! Don’t give yourself unnecessary headaches, read on to find out more.
Establish the Boundaries of your Property
Make it clear to your dog exactly where the boundary to your property is. This can be done by installing a DIY dog fence. Once that has been erected then walk with your dog on a leash around the perimeter of your yard a few times a day.
This will ensure that your dog knows the perimeter of your property and that they are aware of the boundary.
Make your Boundary a Negative Experience
Your dog will then probably test your DIY fence by trying to dig under it or test the strength of the fence. When they do this, call your dogs name in a loud voice or spray a tiny bit of lemon water in their face.
Dogs do not like the smell of lemons and will begin to associate that as a negative experience. This will encourage them to stay away from the boundary of your property and not to disturb it.
Reward Good Behavior in your Dog
After a few days, you should be able to call your dog away from the boundary and they will respond a lot quicker than before. Make sure you reward that behavior with lots of attention or treats to signal that they are displaying good behavior.
Your dog will then learn that keeping away from the boundary of your property is rewarded and therefore will mean they will be less inclined to disturb any fencing or try to run outside of your home.
Reinforce Their Good Behavior by Testing Them
When they have mastered this, it’s time for the last stage of the training. With your dog watching, throw a treat outside of the boundary of your property and say clearly, ‘leave it’.
You can also reinforce this action by saying ‘sit’ or ‘stay’. Once your dog learns not to go after the treat that is outside the boundaries of your property, you can then reward them with attention and another treat.
This is to cement their learning of remaining in your yard. It’s also important to think about any outside distractions such as wildlife or birds that they might be tempted to chase outside of your yard.
