Hello World! Welcome Friends! Electricity is an excellent tool that many of us heavily rely on in our day to day life. Be it for entertainment, or making numerous tasks so much easier. For example, your washing machine and dryer combo makes doing laundry a breeze compared to having to do it by hand. However, electricity can also be very dangerous. Electrical accidents happen all the time in households due to the lack of safety precautions in place.
Sadly this happens often and can happen without much warning. Luckily, you have a few ways to improve your home electrical safety and prevent these accidents.
Electrical Safety and You
Electrical safety should always be a top priority when trying to ensure that your home avoids any electrical incidents that could put you at risk. But it isn’t easy if you don’t know where to start. This is why we’ve made a list of electrical safety tips that can set you on the right path to keeping your home safe from any electricity related incidents.
Tie Up Cords and Keep them Out of the Way
Electrical cords will be what will connect your devices and appliances to the outlet you have in the wall. These often vary in length, but they are all dangerous if left out in the open or exposed. They can be a tripping hazard at minimum, and a fire hazard at worst. This is why you should ensure that you keep your cords as short as possible and out of the way whenever possible.
A few good ways to do this is to tie electrical cords, and laying cords out to move them away from the center of the room. You can even have the cords attached to the wall with some nails specifically made for cables.
Do Not Cover Cords and Power Strips
We just mentioned that you should keep your cords out of the way. However, there is a right way to do this, and a wrong one that is an electrical safety hazard. Covering these peripherals with anything at all puts you and your home at risk. Covering cords and power strips can make it difficult to see if they become damaged. It can be especially problematic if you’re covering them with carpets, or rugs that could easily be set on fire. Covered cords can be an even bigger problem if the carpet is filthy where the dirt and grime can eat away at the cord.
Avoid Plugging In Too Many Appliances into a Single Outlet
We’ve all had situations where we need to draw a bit more power out of an outlet by using a power strip. However, these can be very dangerous in the long term as it can risk overloading the strip and the outlet. These surges could easily start a fire if you’re not too careful. So it is absolutely necessary to use as few appliances on a single outlet as possible. If you must use more than a few appliances or devices on a single outlet or power strip, try to limit the time you do it.
Avoid “Daisy Chaining” Power Strips
Picture this: you need to extend the reach of your outlet and your extension cord isn’t long enough. You’re likely going to use another power strip or extension cord to extend your reach. However, connecting or “daisy chaining” multiple together is a terrible idea that could put you and your home at risk.
Daisy chaining power strips increases the risk that one of the strips will overload, especially if multiple are connected to one. This can damage the appliances connected to it, cause a fire, or even electrocute someone. Instead of daisy chaining multiple strips together, instead you should just get a longer cord to minimize the risk of an electrical accident from happening.
Understand That Your Kitchen is a High Risk Area
One thing to take note of when you’re trying to properly handle electrical safety is to realize that some rooms are at higher risk than others. No other room in the home is as high of a hazard zone than the kitchen.
Not only is the kitchen filled with appliances that may or may not be constantly plugged in, but you’re likely to find water that could short your devices and outlets, and pests like roaches and rats that like to chew on wires flock here. It can be an all around bad time for anyone wanting to keep their home safe from electrical mishaps. So extra care needs to be taken when doing kitchen maintenance to ensure that your kitchen’s electrical safety is top notch.
Final Thoughts
Many of us have taken the wonders of electricity for granted, and become quite careless when handling it. Electrical safety only becomes a concern when something goes terribly wrong. We hope this list can help you make the right electrical safety decisions that will help you avoid these types of issues.
