Hello World! Welcome Friends! 38% of the Great State of Texas is covered with trees – the biggest plants on the planet essential for life. They provide us with vital oxygen, they store carbon, help to stabilize the soil and make a home for thousands of wildlife species. Even the trees in your backyard are important and valuable. If you have two mature trees, they will produce enough oxygen in a year for a family of four to breathe. This is why it is imperative that you look after the trees in your backyard all year round.
Feeding and Watering
It’s not just in the summer you should feed and water your trees, this should be done all year round. Young trees in particular will need watering every two weeks for the first two years after they were planted. This will help them to grow and soak up all the nutrients that they need to thrive. More mature trees will benefit from having a good soaking around the roots once a month, particularly if they are growing in dry soil. You should feed your trees twice a year with a nitrogen-rich solution. This can be made by leaving nettles or comfrey soaking in a bucket of water for two weeks.
Dealing with Pests and Damage
Spring is when you’ll notice many of the more common tree pests becoming active. Aphids, ants and termites are easy to spot and can be treated with a commercial pesticide spray, or even with a natural insecticide made from vinegar and soap. If you have damaged trees, often caused by wildlife, in particular deer, you will need to assess how you can help the tree. It may be that the tree will need to be removed if the damage is extensive. If you are living on a rental property, or the tree is on public land around your house, make sure that you have permission to remove a tree. A city arborist can assess whether you need a tree removal permit.
Preparing Trees for Harsh Weather
At the end of fall, preparing your trees for winter will help them to survive any snow and harsh winds. The best way to do this is to place a thick layer of mulch a meter in radius around the trunk of the tree. Cover the mulch with some burlap sacking secured to the ground to keep it from drying out or being blown away by the wind. This extra layer will help your trees to survive the weather.
The trees in your backyard need looking after all year round, and in return, they will look after you.
