Hello World! Welcome Friends! Sometimes we look around our four walls and just don’t see much of ourselves in the place we live. We just don’t see what we love around us, and that can make a home seem much more like an empty house, and that’s something that needs to change!
Maybe you’ve just moved in and you’re finding it hard to settle, or maybe you’ve been living there for years and you’re getting a bit tired of what you wake up to. Either way, you might be asking yourself, ‘Just how can I give this space a bit more personality?’
It’s quite the task, but it’s one you’re entirely up to, especially with the help of the points below. So, be sure to read on for a bit of inspiration about how to change the decor of your home around, and make your home feel a lot more special.
Go For An Unconventional Layout
Setting your home out right can be done in a variety of ways, and truthfully, there’s no real wrong way to put your sofa or bed! You can put them wherever you most like them and still find that your layout both feels right and functions just fine; it’s only when you start reading about decor tips that you think you’re making a real mistake and start second guessing your design skills.
However, before you fall into this trap, we’re here to remind you that your current layout is just fine, as long as you like it. But if you don’t, it’s time to change it, and make it feel a bit more like you, and make it feel a bit more like your home is a unique place to be. So forget all the rules about Feng Shui if you don’t quite understand them, and feel free to just rearrange until you’re happy with what you see.
It’s also good to keep in mind the function of the room at hand while you’re doing this. If it’s a living room, for example, try not to crowd too much with furniture, as this’ll stop you from just coming in from work and flopping down to relax. You’ll be constantly moving things due to the traffic, and that just doesn’t make for a comfortable and cozy home.
Don’t Leave Those Walls Blank!
The walls around your home are prime real estate for dressing up and making more of a spectacle, and if you’re someone who never really considers the way your walls look, or you’re not really an ‘artsy’ person, it’s time to change a few things. Just take a look around your walls right now and see what you notice.
Are there big gaps full of negative space? Maybe one wall is completely bare, and you can still see the brush strokes of where you didn’t quite get the paint to cover evenly? Or maybe you’ve got a feature wall with some very interesting wallpaper and not much else? Because even though you’ve made a good start with that latter option, it’s time to dress up a bit further.
Sure, artwork and art prints are going to be the most accessible thing to hang up here, but they’re not the only option you can go for. You can also put up some shelves, or hang a cabinet for a bit of extra storage space. You can put a tapestry or cover on the wall, that’ll hang from ceiling corner to ceiling corner and really give your space a brightening force. And you could even just paint it all over again, but this time go for an ombre or toned look, that’ll be unique in any home you could walk into up and down this land!
Take Charge Over Your Energy
Of course, while this might not be a little change to your home (and it’s something you’ll certainly need to do some of your own research into and think about at length!), you’ll certainly want to consider the idea of generating your own energy. It’s a good way to increase the energy efficiency of your home overall, which will help your home to feel more comfortable, and you’ll always rest easy knowing you’re doing your bit for the planet.
But how can you go about taking charge over your energy like this? Well, if you get in touch with a local Solar Panel Contractor, you’ll be able to find out how likely it is you’ll get solar panels and/or batteries installed somewhere on your property. This is the most accessible way to generate a bit of your own energy, even if you still have to pay some of the electricity bill, and it can go a long way to making your home stand out a bit more.
Solar panels and thermals are also good for heating water, so if you’re always overextending the budget on the water bill, this is where your own energy generating methods can really come in handy!
However, you can also try things like geothermal heat pumps, which are great for use if you live in a cooler, more mild area. Seeing as the temperatures underground tend to remain stable, no matter the weather going on above the surface, you’ll be able to draw heat and energy from this source to keep your home running throughout the winter period.
Give Your Doorway a Bit More Life
Have you ever given much thought to the entrance of your home? From the point of contact at the front porch or simple doorstep, to opening the door and coming into a small hallway or corridor that leads off into the rest of the house; your doorway is very much the first impression a person will get, and it’s often forgotten about when it comes to decor efforts.
An empty and almost sterile looking hallway is a functional place, of course, and it stops you from tripping over things when you’re rushing out of the door. But it’s not quite the cozy and creative space you really need it to be, both for your sense of self that’s attached to your home, and for giving any visitors a good idea about who you are and how you live.
So you’re going to need some hallway accompaniments here. Maybe a side table to keep keys and wallets on, or a shoe rack to get all those pairs off of the stairs, and maybe a floor length mirror or two. The latter option alone can help the space to look so much bigger, and the other options will help to fill the space and make it seem much more lived-in.
All in all, that’s what you’re really going for here, as you want your home to feel welcoming, and like it’s ready to keep up with the woes of the day, and your hallway should help to reflect that.
Always Have Something on Display
Finally, it’s time to add a really personal touch. Whether you’re a regional champion in hurdling, or one of your kids has a bunch of school swimming medals to show off, why not put them on full display? Your achievements help make up you as a person, after all, and having them around for both you and your guests to see really helps to make your house feel more like a home.
Not to mention just how happy your kids are going to be when they see their parents outright celebrating their achievements! Putting medals and trophies and certificates up on display, in pride of place around your walls and on top of cabinets, can give your little ones a self-esteem boost when they really need it. And at its heart, a home is meant to care for and protect you, and that includes mental health as well.
And not only can you display the physical achievements you’ve got in your life, but try to make sure you can see marks of your decorating handiwork around your home as well. You’ve been the one person in all this that’s strived to make your home more comfortable, so why not remind yourself of that?
Aside from what we’ve mentioned, maybe hang up a piece of your OWN artwork, or embroidery, or even just a poetic verse YOU wrote out yourself? If you made it, it deserves to go on the wall, and maybe you and your family should come up with a bit of handcrafted memorabilia to set out each.
How Do You Feel About Your Home?
Giving your home a bit more personality doesn’t have to be hard. Simply think about all the things you like and love, and how you can weave them into the fabric of your home. And this can be as simple as just putting up a few more family photos, or putting a rug down on the floor! All in all, if you make your home a bit more cozy and a bit more comfortable, you’ll finally live in a house that feels like your own.
