Hello World! Welcome Friends! There is one thing among all the irritating pests that we find around our house, that’s considered universal and found in almost every part of the world, even the hottest and coldest regions. Can you guess what this is?
If not, we’ll tell you. Bed bugs. That’s right, bed bugs, no matter what shape, size, or color, you get, they are everywhere, and unless you do a few things regularly to keep them at bay, they will keep coming back for more of your blood. It does sound horrific, doesn’t it?
Brooklyn is no stranger to this and the climate in the US is just as extreme as any other part of any other country, which makes for perfect conditions of these critters to thrive if not taken care of immediately. A lot more information can be found on numerous websites such as this one.
Let’s take a step back for a minute and go down to basics.
What Are Bed Bugs?
To put it simply, they are small brown-colored insects that live on the blood of both humans and animals, i.e. they are parasites. Their bodies are flat and they are as small as the seed of an apple, but once they have had their “meal” they swell up and become red. To add further details, a female bug lays almost one hundred eggs, which are barely noticeable and about the size of one speck of dust.
They cannot fly but they can move very quickly, which sometimes makes it very difficult to spot them. The nymphs, which are the young ones shed their skin up to five times before they get older and as such require blood before this shedding takes place, they are a nuisance.
One would typically find them in beds, couches, luggage, and any old clothing and they can fit in any space that about the width of a card. They can hide in mattresses and springs, thus the name, anywhere that they have easy access to people and they can gain access to their blood, is their preferred spot.
Whether you live in a clean house or a dirty house, this is not the deciding factor when it comes to these pests. Most of their bites are painless but can turn into an itchy swelling. People often mistake them for flea bites however, fleas bite people mainly around certain areas such as the ankles, but the latter can bite anywhere if the skin is exposed. Sometimes people may also think they’re mosquito bites. The best way to settle it is to find one and identify it https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/bedbugs/.
How to Find Them
Some DIY may be the agenda when you’re out and about trying to figure if you have them in your room or bed. Obvious places to look will be in and around the bed, i.e. pull everything off the bed including the bedsheet, pillowcases, mattress if possible and check carefully for any of these signs:
- Blood Stains on any of the bedding
- Dark brown spots (excrement) on the bedding, your clothes, and even the walls
- You may see eggshells skin where they hide
- Sometimes the bedding will smell of a foul odor which comes from their glands
Go deep and remove any fabric on top and around the bed or mattress, if any, and don’t forget the frame itself. You may also want to check around the bed on any of the bookshelves, bedside cabinets, or any outlets and radios for instance.
If you’re uncertain of whether you have them or not, take out all the bedding, and check it prudently for things such as marks or blood spots. Remove all covering both on top and at the bottom of the springs and don’t forget the frame too.
Get Rid of Them and Prevent Them from Returning
The question on everyone’s mind is, how to get rid of them. Luckily, there are a few ways to do this and appropriate steps like the ones below will need to be followed consistently. The obvious one being, cleaning all your bedding regularly and drying them on the highest dryer setting possible. If you cannot dry them or they are too delicate, such as children’s toys or stuffed animals, perhaps shoes as well, should be placed in the dryer for about 30 minutes at least.
The second thing and best way to get rid of them is either by taking matters into your own hands and scrubbing the mattress, then vacuuming it and spraying some disinfectant all over it, or you can get rid of them by calling an exterminator that you can find details of for instance via online directories, which are full of bed bug control Brooklyn services and schedule a visit for them to your premises. They have the right tools as well as the right chemicals to get rid of them for good.
Other suggestions you can implement are to putty up any cracks on the walls or tears on wallpapers around the house where they can hide and not be seen until they come out at night. As mentioned earlier it is hard to see them and even harder to make sure everything in your house is checked. But getting extermination done at least once a year can give you that peace of mind knowing that you don’t need to do all the above cleaning again and again for the rest of your days.
The other thing to remember is that because you sleep in your bed you need to use the most harmless chemicals on it so it does not irritate your skin or you and your family don’t breathe the fumes in. buying any household spray won’t do the trick. So, in general, hiring professionals to do the job for you is the best and safest recommendation for any similar situation, after which you can continue to do the upkeep and maintenance every laundry day.
