Hello World! Welcome Friends! Now that we are firmly in the grips of winter, knowing how to protect your home from heavy snow and rain is an absolute must. You may think that the roof is enough to protect you – and it should be – but often it’s not the case. Your home is your castle, and the worst thing that you could do is leave it unprepared for a sudden attack of rain.
Storms can really affect your home, and if you’re not careful, you could find that you need the experts in for roof repair. Staying on top of your weather protection is a must. What if you’re not prepared for the deluge of rain? What do you do if your home springs a leak – and right before Christmas? The key here is preparation. You need to be able to limit flood damage where you can, and with the tips below, you can protect your home from heavy rain.
- Clear The Gutters – The first and most important thing to do if you’re anticipating heavy rain is to get the gutters cleared as soon as you can. Blocked gutters cause the rain to back up and affect your roof, and it could even cause a water build-up so bad that your attic gets flooded. Leaves and twigs accumulate throughout the year and you really need to get on top of it before winter properly sets in. The overflow could cause you big problems!
- Reseal The Windows – Those skylights on the roof? When was the last time you checked the sealant? When your area is affected by heavy downpours, the last thing that you want is to find that the sealant isn’t working to hold it all in. You need to make sure that with regular checks, your sealant is intact. It’s not just the skylights, either. You need to do this for all the windows in the house.
- Check Your Wiring – Heavy rain and storms can often knock out the electrics to the house. This is easily fixed, but it’s the flooding that can cause the biggest problem. you want to make sure that your electrical appliances are stored away properly. If you have a basement, weatherproof it properly so that it won’t be affected by the incoming storms and flooding.
- Cover Up the Air Vents – In the winter months, it’s smart to cover the air vents so that you don’t have to worry about water coming into the house and causing damp patches on the walls. You can cover the vents with plastic sheeting – both inside and outside the house – and this will help!
Your home needs to be as protected as possible before the storms and the rains set in. When you forget to do this, you end up facing expensive repairs, restoration costs, hits to your insurance and then living in a building site while things are fixed. The repairs can take more time than you truly have, so look into ways you can ensure that you don’t need to do this. Keeping your home safe from heavy rain will help!
